Telangana Chief Minister Proposes Transgender Representation in Civic Bodies

Hyderabad witnessed a significant announcement on Monday as Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy proposed nominating transgender persons as co-option members in every municipal corporation across Telangana. The initiative aims to begin with corporations scheduled for polls in February, ensuring direct representation for the transgender community in local governance.

Direct Representation for Marginalized Communities

Addressing a welfare program at Praja Bhavan, which focused on children, senior citizens, and specially challenged persons, the Chief Minister detailed his proposal. He stated that the cabinet would review the plan shortly. Revanth Reddy drew parallels with the existing practice of co-opting minorities in local bodies, emphasizing that transgender individuals deserve institutional representation to independently raise community issues.

The program saw attendance from key political figures, including Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka and ministers Adluri Laxman and D Anasuya Seethakka. Reaffirming Telangana's commitment to social justice, Revanth highlighted that the Centre is adopting the state's caste survey model for a nationwide caste census.

Financial and Social Welfare Announcements

In addition to the transgender representation proposal, the Chief Minister announced several other welfare measures. He declared Rs 2 lakh in financial assistance for specially challenged persons who marry within their community. This benefit will extend even if a non-disabled person marries a specially challenged individual, promoting inclusivity.

Revanth Reddy also reiterated strict implementation of reservations for specially challenged persons in jobs and education. He cited the recent appointment of a Paralympics medallist to a Group-II cadre post as an example of the government's dedication to dignity and self-respect.

Healthcare and Senior Citizen Initiatives

The Chief Minister revealed plans for a comprehensive health policy to be unveiled in the upcoming budget session. This policy aims to ensure access to medical treatment for every citizen. Noting that rising healthcare costs often force families to sell assets, Revanth assured that the Assembly would deliberate extensively on expanding state-supported medical care.

Another key announcement involved a proposed Bill targeting government employees who neglect their parents. The Bill suggests cutting 10–15% of the salaries of such employees, with the deducted amount credited directly to the parents' accounts after verification by revenue officials.

The government is also establishing senior citizen day-care centers, named ‘Pranaam’, across the state to support elderly residents. These centers will provide care and community engagement for senior citizens, enhancing their quality of life.

Overall, these announcements reflect Telangana's ongoing efforts to promote social justice and welfare for all citizens, with a focus on marginalized groups and comprehensive healthcare reforms.
