Landslide in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri Buries Five Houses
A landslide struck the Dahivali area of Khed tehsil in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district on Monday night, burying five houses under debris. The incident prompted an immediate rescue operation by local authorities and disaster response teams.
According to officials, a 75-year-old woman, Kalpana Shelar, was safely rescued from the rubble. However, two other individuals remain trapped as of Tuesday morning. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with teams working to clear debris and locate the missing persons.
Rescue Operation Underway
State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police personnel are conducting the search and rescue operation. The district administration has deployed heavy machinery to assist in clearing the debris. Officials stated that the landslide was triggered by continuous heavy rainfall in the region over the past few days.
Ratnagiri district has been experiencing heavy monsoon showers, leading to soil saturation and increased landslide risk. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a warning for heavy rainfall in the Konkan region, including Ratnagiri.
Local residents reported hearing a loud rumbling sound before the hillside gave way, burying the houses. The affected families were residing in the low-lying area near the hill slope. Authorities have evacuated nearby residents to safer locations as a precaution.
Impact and Response
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has instructed the district collector to ensure swift rescue and relief operations. He also announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. The rescued woman is reported to be in stable condition and is receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
The state government has urged people in landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories. Emergency helplines have been activated for any further assistance.
