West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari reacted to early election trends on May 4, 2026, claiming a consolidation of Hindu votes and a shift in Muslim voting patterns. He noted improved BJP performance in certain Muslim booths in Nandigram and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership promise for the party's gains. Adhikari urged caution, stating that clearer trends would emerge later in the day.
Confidence in Government Formation
After offering prayers at a temple, Adhikari expressed confidence that a government protecting Sanatan Dharma would come to power. He said, "The people of West Bengal have made their choice clear, and we are confident that a government committed to Sanatan Dharma will be formed."
Response to Abhishek Banerjee on Falta Repoll
Responding to remarks by Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on repolling in Falta, Adhikari accused him of arrogance. He asserted that democracy ultimately prevails and criticized Banerjee for his comments. "Abhishek Banerjee's arrogance shows that TMC is afraid of the people's verdict. Democracy will prevail," Adhikari said.
Parallels with Uttar Pradesh and Bihar
Adhikari also drew parallels with past political changes in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, claiming that people have historically rejected what he termed 'jungle raj'. He said, "The people of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar rejected jungle raj, and the same is happening in West Bengal now."
Adhikari's remarks come amid heightened tensions between BJP and TMC during the counting process. The Election Commission has ordered a complete repoll in Falta after clashes and allegations of vote tampering. Security has been tightened across the state, with Kolkata on high alert as counting began for 823 seats across five battleground states.
