Tragedy Strikes Before BSEB Exam: Student Fatally Shot in Bihar
In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, an 18-year-old student was shot dead just three hours before he was scheduled to take his Class XI final examination conducted by the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB). The exams commenced on Monday, but for Sumit Kumar Pandey, the day turned into a nightmare.
Victim's Journey and Final Hours
Sumit Kumar Pandey had returned to his village Banahi in the Shahpur police station area of Bhojpur district on Sunday night. He had arrived from Surat, Gujarat, where his father, Rajiv Kumar Pandey, works, after spending approximately one-and-a-half months with him. The young student was preparing to write his crucial Class XI exam, a significant milestone in his academic career.
According to his grandfather, Ramakant Pandey, Sumit was sleeping beside him when he received a phone call around 10:30 PM on Sunday night. "Sumit got up and went out after locking the house from outside," Ramakant recounted while speaking to reporters at the Sadar Hospital in Ara. "However, at about 6 AM on Monday, I was informed that Sumit was lying dead beside the Bankat-Banahi road. He was shot in the head."
Family's Anguish and Police Investigation
The family expressed profound grief and confusion over the incident. Ramakant Pandey emphasized that they have no known enmity with anyone in the village, stating, "We don't have any enmity with anyone in the village." This has left the motive for the murder shrouded in mystery, adding to the tragedy of a young life cut short.
Shahpur Station House Officer (SHO) Rajesh Malakar confirmed that the police are actively investigating the case. "Though the family members of the deceased deny any enmity with anyone, the police investigation is going on to trace the culprits and ascertain the reason behind the murder," Malakar told TOI on Monday. The body was sent to the Sadar Hospital in Ara for an autopsy to gather further forensic evidence.
Last Moments and Community Impact
Sumit's cousin, Avinash Pandey, provided details of his final hours. "I saw Sumit alighting at the Banahi station and going home on Sunday evening when I was at my shop," Avinash said. "Later, he talked to me and my brother till 9 PM. He went to sleep after I told him that it was getting late, as he had to take his exam. I came to know about the incident on Monday morning."
The murder has not only devastated the family but also raised concerns about safety in the region, particularly for students during exam periods. The incident occurred about 1 kilometer away from Sumit's village, highlighting the vulnerability even in seemingly peaceful rural areas.
