MK Stalin resigned as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday after his party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), suffered a crushing defeat in the state assembly elections. The election results, announced earlier this week, showed the opposition alliance securing a clear majority, ending the DMK's five-year rule.
Stalin's Resignation and Address
In a televised address, Stalin announced his resignation, taking responsibility for the electoral loss. He thanked the people of Tamil Nadu for their support during his tenure and expressed gratitude to DMK workers for their tireless efforts. 'I accept the mandate of the people with humility. I resign as Chief Minister, effective immediately,' he said.
Election Results and Aftermath
The opposition alliance, led by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and its allies, secured a landslide victory, winning over 200 seats in the 234-member assembly. The DMK managed to win only 30 seats, a sharp decline from its previous tally of 133. The defeat is seen as a major setback for Stalin, who had led the DMK to power in 2021.
Political analysts attribute the DMK's loss to anti-incumbency, corruption allegations, and a strong opposition campaign. The AIADMK alliance promised a new era of governance, focusing on development and transparency.
Transition of Power
Governor R.N. Ravi accepted Stalin's resignation and invited the AIADMK alliance to form the government. The new Chief Minister is expected to be sworn in later this week. Stalin's resignation marks the end of a significant chapter in Tamil Nadu politics, with the DMK now set to play the role of opposition.
