Thiruvananthapuram's Sree Chitra Tirunal Park Set for Major Revamp After Years of Neglect
Sree Chitra Tirunal Park in Thiruvananthapuram to Get Major Revamp

The long-neglected Sree Chitra Tirunal Park in Thiruvananthapuram's historic East Fort area is finally set to receive a comprehensive restoration. The city corporation has decided to prioritize the revival of this iconic urban green space, placing it as a key agenda item at the first council meeting of the newly elected governing body this month.

From Glory to Disrepair: A Park's Decline

Once a vibrant recreational hub following a Rs 1.9 crore facelift under the Smart City project in 2022, the park has sadly fallen into a state of disrepair in recent years. This decline has drawn consistent criticism from local residents and civic activists who remember its better days.

Originally known as Iron Villa Park, it was renamed in honour of Sree Chithira Tirunal Balarama Varma, the last king of the erstwhile princely state of Travancore. Occupying a prime historic location near the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, it was once a serene destination for families, fitness enthusiasts, and tourists.

However, locals report that the park's charm has completely faded. The landscape is now dominated by:

  • Rusted and unusable gym equipment.
  • Broken lights and dilapidated benches.
  • Patches of overgrown and unkempt grass.

Residents also highlight a significant safety issue, noting that after sunset, the poorly maintained space often attracts anti-social elements, deterring families and senior citizens from visiting. "It is tragic to see something that was once one of the city's favourite hangout spots reduced to this state," lamented Fort ward resident H Subramaniam.

The Corporation's Phased Revival Plan

A city corporation official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the council will adopt a detailed, phased plan for the park's restoration. "We intend not just to fix infrastructure but make the park safe and welcoming again," the official stated.

The proposal to be discussed includes a comprehensive upgrade covering:

  • Modern and adequate lighting systems.
  • Renovation of children's play areas.
  • New, sturdy seating arrangements.
  • Professional landscaping.
  • Enhanced security measures, including proper surveillance.

A New Management Model for Sustainable Upkeep

In a significant shift, the restoration plan under consideration may involve handing over the park's maintenance to private agencies with expertise in event and space management. This model is already being explored by the corporation for other public parks in the city.

The goal of this public-private approach is twofold: to ensure consistent, high-quality upkeep and to organize regular cultural and recreational activities. This strategy aims to transform the park back into a vibrant community hub, buzzing with positive engagement.

City residents have largely welcomed the announced move, expressing hope that the redevelopment will successfully restore the park's former glory and appeal. Civic leaders have emphasized that an early start to this project would send a strong, positive signal about the new governing body's commitment to enhancing the quality of life in the state capital.
