Siddaramaiah Becomes Karnataka's Longest-Serving CM, Hints at Uncertain Future
Siddaramaiah: Karnataka's longest-serving CM, tenure uncertain

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has officially become the state's longest-serving chief minister, surpassing a historic record, even as he expressed uncertainty about the duration of his remaining tenure. The milestone was achieved on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, when he crossed the previous record of seven years and 238 days set by former Congress leader Devaraj Urs.

A Milestone Marked by Mixed Signals

Speaking to reporters in Haveri after laying the foundation stone for various development projects, Siddaramaiah reflected on his achievement with characteristic humility. "I did not enter politics with the intent of breaking any record," he stated. "It is a matter of circumstances and providence. I have had the opportunity to surpass Devaraj Urs's tenure due to the support of the public."

However, his remarks took a contemplative turn when he addressed his political future. "Only with the blessings of the people can we function as political leaders. I have come this far with the blessings of the people. I do not know how long I will remain in power," Siddaramaiah said, highlighting that his continuation in office hinges on public support.

Contrasting Statements on a Second Term

This note of uncertainty is particularly striking because it came just a day after the Chief Minister himself voiced a clear ambition. On Tuesday, Siddaramaiah had expressed his desire to complete a second full five-year term in office, contingent on a decision from the Congress high command.

The juxtaposition of these two statements within 24 hours has sparked discussions in political circles about the internal dynamics within the Karnataka Congress and the leadership's plans. Siddaramaiah's tenure has been a topic of speculation, often linked to the ambitions of his deputy, D.K. Shivakumar.

Colleagues Extend Wishes Amidst Speculation

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who was seen offering cake to Siddaramaiah during the Haveri event, publicly congratulated the CM on his record. On Tuesday, Shivakumar said, "I pray to God to bestow him with good health, success and an opportunity to serve the people for a long time."

When asked about Siddaramaiah's wish for a full term, Shivakumar offered a succinct response: "I wish Siddaramaiah well. I wish him all the best." The Chief Minister is now expected to shift his focus to governance, with budget meetings scheduled to begin after the Sankranti festival next week.

The record-breaking tenure underscores Siddaramaiah's significant footprint in Karnataka's political landscape. Yet, his own words reveal a leader who views power as transient, firmly rooted in the mandate of the people, even as he navigates the complex equations within his party.
