Shiv Sena Suffers Political Blow in Badlapur with BJP Switch
In a significant political development, the ruling Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faced a major setback in Badlapur on Sunday. A senior party functionary, along with numerous workers and relatives of sitting corporators, formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This move marks a notable shift in local power dynamics.
Key Figures Make the Switch
The defection included prominent individuals from the Shiv Sena's Badlapur unit. Praveen Raut, who served as the deputy city chief, led the group. Ganesh Lamture, the husband of a Shiv Sena corporator, also joined the BJP. A substantial number of Sena workers accompanied them in this political realignment.
Interestingly, Praveen Raut's wife, Sheetal Raut, and his sister-in-law, Vijaya Raut, continue to hold their positions as Shiv Sena corporators in the municipal council. This situation highlights the complex family and political ties at play.
Reasons Behind the Defection
Praveen Raut explained his decision to join the BJP by pointing to years of dedication that went unrecognized. He claimed to have served the Shiv Sena for over two decades without proper acknowledgment. Raut stated that senior local leaders faced repeated sidelining, with decisions made without consulting experienced members.
"This ongoing neglect compelled me to explore a new political path," he said, emphasizing the dissatisfaction at the grassroots level.
BJP Welcomes New Entrants
BJP MLA Kisan Kathore welcomed the new members, suggesting the shift reflects growing resentment within the Shiv Sena over its internal functioning. Kathore alleged that many leaders and workers feel disillusioned with what he described as dynastic and unilateral decision-making in the party.
According to Kathore, the BJP is emerging as an alternative platform for those seeking transparent and inclusive leadership. This statement underscores the BJP's strategy to capitalize on internal conflicts within rival parties.
Internal Discord and Political Context
Sources indicate that the latest defections are closely linked to internal discord within the Shinde-led Shiv Sena. A contentious issue involves the 'co-opted councillor' position in the Badlapur Municipal Council, which has reportedly deepened factionalism within the party.
This political realignment follows the Badlapur Municipal Council elections last month, where the BJP emerged as the single largest party. The BJP subsequently formed a ruling alliance with the NCP, altering the local power equations significantly.
The defection in Badlapur signals a challenging period for the Shiv Sena as it grapples with internal strife and external political pressures. The move could have broader implications for the party's stability in the region.
