Educational institutions across several districts in Tamil Nadu will remain shut on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, as a precautionary measure against heavy rainfall and the approaching Cyclone Ditwah. District collectors in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu announced the holiday following updates from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).
Cyclone Ditwah Tracks Close to Coastline
The MET office reported that Cyclone Ditwah, currently positioned over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is showing signs of weakening. It is expected to reduce to a deep depression as it nears the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coastline. By midnight on Sunday, November 30, 2025, the system was forecast to be within a minimum distance of 30 km from the North Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coast.
According to the RMC bulletin, the cyclone's location on Sunday evening was approximately:
- 90 km southeast of Cuddalore
- 120 km northeast of Karaikal
- 90 km southeast of Puducherry
- 170 km northeast of Vedaranniyam
- 150 km southeast of Chennai
The system's minimum distance from the coast was around 80 km at that time. Moving slowly at about 5 kmph, Cyclone Ditwah is predicted to continue on a near-northward path, running parallel to the coastline.
Widespread Rainfall and Precautionary Measures
Chennai and its surrounding regions have been experiencing continuous rainfall since Monday morning, leading to waterlogged roads and accumulation in low-lying areas. Private weather agencies predict further showers in several districts including:
- Chennai
- Kancheepuram
- Tiruvallur
- Chengalpattu
- Ranipet
Authorities emphasized that the closure of schools and colleges is purely a precautionary step to ensure public safety amid the ongoing and forecasted adverse weather. They have advised residents to exercise caution, stay indoors when possible, and diligently monitor local weather advisories for further updates.
MET Office Continues Vigil
The India Meteorological Department continues to monitor the situation closely. While the cyclone is expected to weaken, it will remain in close proximity to the coast. The MET office reiterated that the centre of the system is likely to stay within 30 km of the coastline by the midnight of November 30. Officials urge the public to remain alert to updates regarding rainfall intensity and potential local flooding conditions. All future decisions regarding institutional operations will depend on subsequent MET office advisories as Cyclone Ditwah progresses along the coast.
