Opposition Leader Satheesan Criticizes CM Vijayan's Unyielding RRTS Approach
In a sharp political critique, opposition leader V D Satheesan has openly mocked chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan's adamant approach to the regional rapid transit system (RRTS) — the high-speed rail project proposed by the Kerala state government. Satheesan highlighted Vijayan's reluctance to listen to the advice of Metroman E Sreedharan regarding the elevated rail line suggested by the veteran engineer.
Recalling Past Controversies: Sreedharan and Kochi Metro
Satheesan pointed out a striking irony in the current political dynamics. He recalled that during the tenure of Congress chief minister Oommen Chandy, the CPM had created a significant ruckus by alleging that Sreedharan was going to be removed as the in-charge of the Kochi Metro project. Now, however, everyone from that same party is ridiculing him, Satheesan noted, underscoring the shift in stance.
Last week, Vijayan stated that the government had once gone to New Delhi after considering Sreedharan's suggestions as an alternative to the SilverLine semi high-speed rail project. However, he claimed that even the Union minister was unaware of this proposal. Satheesan countered this by explaining that the UDF opposed the K-Rail project because the detailed project report indicated it could lead to an environmental disaster in Kerala.
Satheesan's Stance on the RRTS Project
Satheesan elaborated on his position regarding the new project announced by the Indian Railways. When the central government announced a new project, I said I would not oppose it and wanted to see what it entailed, he stated. The day after this statement, social media was abuzz with claims that he opposed the state government's project but supported the central government's initiative.
He clarified that the project is the responsibility of the Indian Railways, and figures like Sreedharan have suggested waiting to see how it unfolds. Sreedharan is not being consulted now, Satheesan alleged, questioning the reasons behind this exclusion. During Chandy's tenure, protests were led by industry minister P Rajeeve, who created stories about Sreedharan's removal from the Kochi Metro project. Now, they are not engaging with Sreedharan, the reason for which is unclear, he added.
Focus on Environmental and Feasibility Concerns
Satheesan emphasized that his concern is not partisan but based on practical assessments. We are not against bringing a high-speed train to Kerala, he asserted, but it should be grounded in thorough environmental assessments and feasibility studies for the state. He criticized the state government for discussing the high-speed rail corridor as if it will be implemented in 10 years, without even conducting preliminary studies.
In conclusion, Satheesan reiterated his support for any good project, regardless of who proposes it, as long as it benefits Kerala. We will support any good project, regardless of who proposes it, as long as it benefits Kerala, he said, calling for a more inclusive and evidence-based approach to infrastructure development in the state.
