In a tragic turn of events, a village sarpanch in Ludhiana is set to propose a resolution to ban kite flying after her 15-year-old son succumbed to injuries caused by a Chinese dor (sharp kite string). Harchand Singh, whose wife Kamaljit Kaur serves as the sarpanch of Rohlan village, expressed that the dangerous kite strings have claimed many victims, including their son.
Incident Details
On January 24, Taranjot Singh and his cousin Prabhjot Singh were critically injured when a Chinese dor struck them near Chehlan village. While Taranjot lost his life, his cousin survived with severe injuries. Harchand Singh recounted that his son had earlier expressed concerns about the dangers of China Dor and even requested an announcement in the village against its use.
Family's Grief and Actions
Harchand Singh stated that his wife remains in deep emotional distress, unable to come to terms with the loss. The family has preserved Taranjot's belongings—his bag, shoes, and clothes—exactly as he left them, as a painful reminder. The sarpanch and her husband plan to pass a resolution in the panchayat to stop kite flying, and they will also persuade neighboring villages to adopt similar measures.
Harchand Singh criticized the authorities for their lack of action. Although the police registered a case against unidentified persons, no arrests have been made. A day after the incident, farmers staged a protest, providing names of four individuals selling the banned string, but the police only conducted a flag march before things returned to normal.
Taranjot's Achievements
Taranjot was an excellent student, having received a double promotion in the fourth standard. He was also a talented bhangra dancer, winning first prize, and skilled at tying turbans. Additionally, he loved cricket.
Community Reaction
Dalbara Singh, a relative from Khatran village, described Taranjot as a pious and intelligent boy. He noted that those who fly kites with China Dor fail to understand its lethal potential. He urged the government to take stricter action, stating that the sale of China Dor could be curbed within days if authorities were serious.
The family recalls celebrating Harchand Singh's birthday just ten days before the tragedy, a memory now tinged with sorrow.
