New UP Vidhan Sabha May Rise on Sahara Shahar Land in Lucknow
Sahara Shahar Shortlisted for New UP Assembly Building

The iconic Sahara Shahar in Lucknow, a vast estate that once mirrored the opulence and influence of its former lessee, the late Subrato Roy, could soon undergo a dramatic transformation. It has emerged as a prime location for the construction of a new Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) for Uttar Pradesh. A final decision on this significant development is anticipated within the next three weeks.

High-Level Meeting Sets the Stage

The proposal gained serious momentum following a crucial meeting held approximately ten days ago. The meeting was chaired by Chief Secretary Shashi Pakash Goyal. During this high-level discussion, it was decided that concerned departments, including Awas Vikas (Urban Development) and the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA), must prepare and submit a formal proposal within a month's time.

Sources have confirmed that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has given his preliminary approval for moving forward with proposals to build a new assembly complex. This push is driven by the anticipated increase in the strength of the Vidhan Sabha, creating a pressing need for more spacious and modern facilities.

Why Sahara Shahar is the Frontrunner

Among several shortlisted sites, Sahara Shahar stands out for compelling practical reasons. A senior official involved in the planning highlighted that the 170-acre property is the largest available land parcel under consideration, with plans to acquire an additional 100 acres. This vast space is deemed ideally suited for a project of this scale and prestige.

Furthermore, the location offers excellent connectivity. It is well-linked to all major roads in the state capital and is situated at a convenient distance from both the Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport and the Lucknow railway station. The land, which once hosted extravagant parties for the elite, now presents a blank canvas for a seat of democratic power.

Other Potential Sites in the Running

While Sahara Shahar is a strong candidate, officials are also evaluating other options to ensure the best decision is made. The alternative sites under consideration include:

  • Land belonging to the Defence Expo in Vrindavan Colony.
  • The existing Lucknow Zoo land, with the zoo itself likely to be relocated to the Kukrail picnic spot area.
  • The possibility of expanding the current Vidhan Sabha premises.

The Path Forward and Final Approval

The process is now in an advanced stage. Once the various departments submit their detailed proposals within the stipulated one-month timeframe, the options will be thoroughly examined and finalized. The finalized proposal will then be presented to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for his final go-ahead.

This potential repurposing of Sahara Shahar marks a significant shift from its past as a private symbol of corporate grandeur to a future as a public institution central to Uttar Pradesh's governance. The coming weeks will be decisive in determining whether this historic change of fate becomes a reality.
