SAD President Sukhbir Badal Launches Punjab Bachao Campaign with Sweeping Populist Promises
In a major political move, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal anchored his party's "Punjab Bachao" campaign on Tuesday, unveiling a comprehensive set of populist pledges aimed at revitalizing the state. Addressing a rally in Khanna alongside party leader Yadwinder Singh Yadu, Badal framed these promises as essential for economic growth and administrative efficiency.
District Status for Khanna and Jagraon
Central to Badal's announcement was the commitment to grant district status to both Khanna and Jagraon if the SAD is returned to power. He emphasized that this administrative upgrade is a long-standing demand of the people, crucial for boosting local economies and ensuring easy redressal of grievances. "I am committed to honoring the demand of the people who want their towns turned into districts to boost their economies and ensure easy redressal of grievances," Badal stated, positioning this as a key plank of his party's platform.
Agricultural Modernization and Support
Badal took direct aim at the current administration's handling of Punjab's vital farming sector. He pledged to:
- Modernize the Khanna grain market, which is Asia's largest, to enhance efficiency and profitability for farmers.
- Restore commission rates for wheat and paddy to 2.5%, reversing a recent cap of 1.5% imposed by the government.
These measures are designed to address farmer discontent and bolster the agricultural backbone of the state.
Industrial and Educational Initiatives
Expanding beyond agriculture, Badal detailed a vision for industrial modernization and youth empowerment:
- IT Expansion: Bringing the information technology industry to Punjab "in a big way" to create jobs and diversify the economy.
- Entrepreneurial Support: Offering ₹10 lakh interest-free loans to youth to encourage startups and foster innovation.
- Education Quotas: Reserving 50% of seats in medical and engineering colleges for meritorious school students, with free professional education to promote academic excellence.
Tough Stance on Crime and Environment
In a hardline stance on law and order, Badal proposed new legislation to:
- Deny bail to gangsters and drug lords, aiming to curb organized crime.
- Seize the entire property holdings of such criminals, as a deterrent measure.
Additionally, he addressed the environmental crisis in the Malwa belt, promising a total ban on industrial and sewerage effluent entering the Sutlej and Beas rivers. "I will not let one drop of effluent enter these rivers," he asserted, targeting the scourge of cancer linked to water pollution.
Criticism of Current Government
Badal condemned Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for allegedly wasting ₹4,400 crore on self-promotional advertising while farmers await crop damage compensation. He characterized the government's plan to provide ₹1,000 monthly to women as a "vote-purchasing attempt" funded by an unsustainable ₹52,000 crore loan, accusing the administration of fiscal irresponsibility.
The Punjab Bachao campaign sets the stage for a heated political battle in Punjab, with Badal's promises aiming to resonate with voters across agricultural, industrial, and social sectors.
