SAD's 'Punjab Bachao' Rally in Faridkot: Sukhbir Badal Slams Delhi Parties Over Historical Injustices
In a significant political gathering, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) organized another 'Punjab Bachao' rally in Faridkot on Monday, where party president Sukhbir Singh Badal delivered a forceful address. He reiterated the party's unwavering commitment to addressing what he termed as "historical injustices inflicted on Punjab by parties controlled from Delhi." The rally, orchestrated by senior party leader Parambans Singh Romana, drew attention to long-standing grievances that have shaped Punjab's political landscape.
Key Allegations Against Delhi-Based Parties
Sukhbir Badal outlined several critical issues during his speech, emphasizing that Punjab has been systematically disadvantaged. He stated, "Punjab is the only state in India which does not have its own capital." According to him, this anomaly stems from the Congress party's preferential treatment towards Haryana during the state's reorganization. He further elaborated that this bias has perpetuated a sense of marginalization among Punjabis.
Another major point of contention highlighted was the linguistic reorganization of states. Sukhbir asserted, "We are also the only state in the country where Punjabi-speaking areas were left out while reconstituting it on linguistic lines." This exclusion, he argued, has undermined the cultural and administrative integrity of Punjab, contributing to ongoing tensions.
Water Rights and the SYL Canal Controversy
The issue of river water distribution took center stage in Sukhbir's address. He accused the Congress party of arbitrarily diverting half of Punjab's river waters to Rajasthan, violating the riparian principle. This principle holds that states through which rivers flow have exclusive rights over their waters. Sukhbir warned, "These parties still want to take away the remaining water of the state by completing the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal."
He credited the SAD with preventing the flow of water through the SYL canal so far, claiming that if completed, it would turn Punjab into a desert. "If this water is given to Haryana, our state would have turned into a desert," he declared, underscoring the party's role in safeguarding Punjab's resources.
SAD's Commitment Versus Delhi Parties
Sukhbir Badal drew a sharp contrast between the SAD and other political entities. He asserted, "Political parties based in Delhi can never match the SAD's concern for Punjab. They come to rule and loot, whereas the SAD's motive is to serve people." This statement reinforced the party's positioning as the sole genuine advocate for Punjab's interests, distancing itself from what he described as exploitative external forces.
He also cautioned the public against what he termed as "experimenting" with new political figures. Sukhbir warned, "Remember such persons are puppets of agencies. They can never share the same concern and commitment for Punjab and Punjabis like the SAD." This remark appeared to target emerging political rivals, suggesting they lack authenticity and are manipulated by external agencies.
Rally Organization and Broader Context
The rally was effectively organized by Parambans Singh Romana, who also addressed the gathering, amplifying the party's message. The event is part of a series of 'Punjab Bachao' rallies aimed at mobilizing support and highlighting the SAD's agenda ahead of upcoming political engagements. By focusing on core issues like capital status, linguistic integrity, and water rights, the SAD seeks to consolidate its base and challenge the dominance of national parties in Punjab's politics.
This rally underscores the ongoing political dynamics in Punjab, where regional parties like the SAD are intensifying efforts to reclaim their influence by addressing historical grievances and positioning themselves as the true custodians of the state's welfare.
