On Sunday morning, tension erupted outside a counting centre in West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's constituency. Workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), who were camping approximately 100 metres from the centre, alleged that two cars bearing BJP flags entered the premises and approached the strongroom where the votes are stored.
Allegations of Foul Play
The TMC workers claimed that the entry of the vehicles with BJP insignia was a deliberate attempt to influence the counting process. They raised slogans and demanded immediate action from the Election Commission. Security personnel were deployed to control the situation, and the area was cordoned off to prevent any untoward incidents.
ECI's Response
Officials from the Election Commission of India (ECI) reached the spot and assured a thorough investigation into the matter. They stated that strict action would be taken if any violation of the model code of conduct was found. The counting process, however, continued without interruption, with additional security measures in place.
The incident has added to the political heat in the state, which is witnessing a high-stakes electoral battle between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP. Both parties have accused each other of attempting to manipulate the election process.
