Tragic Roof Collapse at Wedding Ceremony in Bihar Claims Two Lives
Patna: A joyous wedding celebration turned into a scene of tragedy in Bihar's Aurangabad district on Saturday night when the roof of a house collapsed, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to around ten individuals. The unfortunate incident unfolded at the residence of Ramvyas Singh in Manjhiyawa village, located under the jurisdiction of the Obera police station.
Details of the Catastrophic Event
According to eyewitness accounts, the disaster struck during the jaimala ceremony, a traditional ritual where the bride and groom exchange garlands. The wedding was for Ramvyas Singh's daughter, and the groom's procession had recently arrived. As the ceremony proceeded, a significant number of women and children climbed onto the roof of a neighboring house to get a better view of the festivities.
The structure could not withstand the excessive load, causing the roof to give way suddenly. Debris rained down on guests seated below, trapping several under the wreckage. Villagers immediately initiated rescue operations, pulling out those trapped and rushing the injured to hospitals in Daudnagar and Aurangabad. Some of the more critically injured were referred to higher-level medical facilities for advanced care.
Victims Identified and Police Investigation
Police have identified the deceased as Satyanarayan Singh (46) and Akhileshwar Yadav (48), both residents of the same village. Satyanarayan was a farmer, while Akhileshwar worked at the Kalyan Chak Colliery under the Chirkunda police station area in Dhanbad. Villagers revealed that the two were cousin brothers of the bride and had come specifically to attend the wedding.
Nitish Kumar, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Obera police station, provided an update on the situation. "Approximately ten people sustained injuries, including villagers and some individuals from the groom's side. They are currently out of danger and receiving treatment. We are investigating whether the collapse was due to overcrowding or a potential construction defect. A thorough investigation is ongoing," he stated.
Community Response and Ongoing Concerns
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting concerns about building safety during large gatherings. The swift response by villagers in the rescue efforts was crucial in preventing further casualties. Authorities are now examining the structural integrity of the building to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
This tragic event underscores the importance of safety precautions at social functions, especially in areas where infrastructure may not be designed to handle large crowds. The police continue their probe to ascertain liability and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
