Kolkata: In a significant political development, rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Aroop Biswas has demanded a freeze on the party's bank accounts, alleging misuse of funds worth over Rs 1,000 crore. The letter, dated June 12, was received at the HDFC Bank branch in Kolkata's Central Plaza four days later, on June 16.
Background of the Demand
The demand comes after 20 Lok Sabha MPs met Speaker Om Birla on June 10 and announced their merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI). Biswas, a former TMC strongman, has been at odds with the party leadership over financial irregularities.
Allegations of Fund Misuse
In his letter, Biswas claimed that the TMC had accumulated funds through dubious means and that the money should be frozen to prevent further misuse. He urged the bank to take immediate action to safeguard the interests of the public.
The TMC, however, dismissed the allegations as baseless and accused Biswas of acting under pressure from rival political groups. The party maintains that all its financial transactions are transparent and in compliance with legal norms.
Political Implications
The demand for a freeze on TMC accounts is seen as a major escalation in the ongoing feud within the party. Biswas, once a close aide of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has been sidelined in recent months, leading to his rebellion.
Political analysts believe that this move could weaken the TMC's financial position ahead of crucial state elections. The party has faced several defections in the past year, with many leaders joining the NCPI.
Bank's Response
HDFC Bank officials have confirmed receipt of the letter but declined to comment on the matter, citing customer confidentiality. Legal experts suggest that the bank may need to seek court directions before freezing any accounts.
The TMC has vowed to challenge any legal action against its accounts, calling it a politically motivated attempt to destabilize the party.
