Rawain Valley Residents Renew Push for Separate District Status in Uttarkashi

The persistent demand for carving out Rawain valley in Uttarkashi as an independent district has resurfaced with renewed vigor. On Friday, the district formation struggle committee organized a significant mahapanchayat to deliberate on this crucial issue, highlighting the social and geographical imperatives behind their long-standing plea.

Mahapanchayat Unites Villagers for District Formation Cause

Representatives and villagers from Rama, Kamal Sirai, and Mori converged at the Kamal Ganga riverbank playground in Purola for this pivotal gathering. The meeting served as a platform to discuss strategic approaches to reinforce their demands for establishing Rawain as a separate administrative entity.

Geographical Challenges Fueling the Demand

The proposed Rawain district would encompass the expansive area stretching from Radi Top to Arakot, which shares a border with Himachal Pradesh. Residents from villages including Damta, Purola, Naugaon, and Mori continue to face substantial hardships in accessing the district headquarters located in Uttarkashi town.

The challenging terrain and remote locations make even routine administrative tasks arduous journeys for local villagers, explained Prakash Kumar, convenor of the struggle committee and district president of Congress' scheduled caste cell.

Administrative Hardships and Travel Burdens

Villagers are compelled to undertake lengthy travels for minor official procedures, creating significant inconvenience and hampering efficient governance. This geographical isolation has been a primary driver behind the decades-long movement for district separation.

Formal Memorandum Submitted to State Authorities

On the same day as the mahapanchayat, committee delegates submitted a formal memorandum to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami through Sub-Divisional Magistrate Mukesh Ramola. This document outlines the region's demands and the rationale behind seeking independent district status.

Warning of Potential Agitation if Demands Ignored

Prakash Kumar issued a clear warning regarding the committee's future course of action. If the government fails to address this demand promptly with appropriate measures, the people of Rawain valley may be compelled to resume agitation, he stated, emphasizing the seriousness of their resolve.

Historical Context of the District Formation Movement

This recent mobilization follows several years of sustained protests and advocacy efforts aimed at establishing Rawain as a separate district. The movement represents a collective aspiration for improved governance accessibility and regional development tailored to the valley's unique geographical and social characteristics.
