Ranchi LPG Crisis: Residents Endure Long Queues Despite Government Directives
In Ranchi, a persistent shortage of LPG cylinders has left city consumers waiting for refills for extended periods, defying repeated directives from state food and civil supplies minister Irfan Ansari and the district administration. The situation highlights a stark contrast between official orders and ground realities, with families forced to queue on roads in desperation.
Administrative Directives Fall Short
On April 4, the Ranchi district administration issued a clear directive to LPG distributors, prohibiting customers from visiting godowns and depots to collect cylinders. This was followed by a meeting convened by Minister Irfan Ansari on April 9, where he warned petroleum company officials and district supply officers of stringent action if distributors were found delivering cylinders to consumers on roads. Despite these measures, compliance remains elusive.
Ground Reality: Queues and Frustration
Around 100 families from Netaji Nagar in Kantatoli queued up on a road from early Sunday morning, hoping to purchase cylinders after failing to secure them for days. Manish Kumar, a local resident, alleged that the LPG distributor never delivers cylinders to their homes. "Although the minister and the administration have ordered doorstep delivery, the reality is completely different. I received delivery authentication codes four times since March, but each time the code expires as the agency fails to provide a cylinder," he explained.
Another resident, Harish Singh, shared a similar plight, having booked a cylinder around 15 days ago without success. "I queued up from around 4 am on Sunday, but despite waiting for hours, I had to return empty-handed. The minister recently promised normalization within a week, but I have doubts," Singh added, reflecting widespread skepticism.
Official Response and Monitoring
Ranchi deputy commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri stated that the district administration is actively monitoring the situation. "The administration is trying to streamline the situation across the district," he assured, though residents continue to face hardships. This ongoing crisis underscores challenges in implementing policies aimed at ensuring essential supplies reach consumers efficiently.
The LPG shortage in Ranchi not only disrupts daily life but also raises questions about the effectiveness of governance in addressing public grievances. As families struggle with basic needs, the gap between directives and delivery persists, calling for more robust enforcement and accountability.
