DMK's T R B Rajaa Faces Uphill Battle in Home Turf of Mannargudi
After successfully attracting global corporations to Tamil Nadu as the state's industries minister, DMK leader T R B Rajaa now confronts a significantly more difficult political assignment: securing victory in his own backyard, the agrarian constituency of Mannargudi. This crucial electoral battle in the heart of the Cauvery delta region has intensified dramatically with shifting political alliances and new challengers entering the fray.
Political Landscape Transforms with New Alliances
Rajaa, the son of DMK veteran T R Baalu, has represented Mannargudi since 2011 and maintains deep familiarity with the constituency's dynamics. However, the political equation has fundamentally changed with T T V Dhinakaran's AMMK now formally aligned with the AIADMK alliance. This development creates a formidable opposition bloc that could challenge Rajaa's longstanding dominance.
The 2021 assembly election provides crucial context for understanding the current contest. During that election, AMMK secured approximately 40,000 votes in Mannargudi, representing nearly twenty percent of the total votes cast. More significantly, the combined vote share of AIADMK and AMMK actually surpassed that achieved by Rajaa himself, prompting AIADMK to strategically cede the seat to its alliance partner for the current election cycle.
Caste Dynamics and Voter Shifts Create Complex Scenario
Much of AMMK's previous electoral support originated from the Thevar community, a dominant social bloc in Mannargudi to which Rajaa himself belongs. DMK cadres and political analysts suggest that AMMK may struggle to replicate its 2021 performance because a substantial portion of those votes represented "anti-EPS" sentiment, cast during the period of conflict between Dhinakaran and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami.
With Dhinakaran and Palaniswami now politically aligned, some of those previously anti-EPS voters may shift their support toward V K Sasikala's newly formed AIPTMMK, which has also fielded a candidate in Mannargudi. Sasikala launched her political party just two months ago and has been campaigning vigorously against EPS while leveraging her deep personal connections to the constituency.
Sasikala's Local Roots Add Another Dimension
Sasikala maintains particularly strong ties to Mannargudi, where she was born and raised, and the town remains closely associated with her extended family. Her brother, V K Divakaran, continues to reside there, providing a local anchor for her political activities. AIPTMMK has been visibly active throughout the constituency, establishing party offices, painting political graffiti, and conducting ground-level campaigning to mobilize support.
AIADMK supporters, however, consistently downplay Sasikala's potential influence. "Sasikala will secure a negligible share of votes in this election," asserted S Venkatesh, an AIADMK supporter from Vadapathi, reflecting the confidence within established alliance circles about containing this new political force.
Multiple Challenges Converge for Incumbent
Rajaa faces additional complications from AMMK's candidate selection. The party has nominated S Kamaraj, who previously contested against Rajaa in both the 2016 and 2021 elections, losing on both occasions. "There exists a genuine sympathy wave for Kamaraj among certain voter segments due to his consecutive electoral losses," explained R Rajappa, an AMMK worker from Peraiyur, highlighting how past defeats might paradoxically strengthen the challenger's current position.
Meanwhile, actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and Seeman's Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) are likely to further fragment the vote share, potentially pushing this already competitive contest toward a dramatic photo finish. The presence of multiple significant contenders creates a scenario where even modest vote splits could determine the final outcome.
Development Record and Alliance Strength as Counterweights
Despite these multifaceted challenges, Rajaa remains publicly confident about his prospects, emphasizing the welfare initiatives and development projects implemented in Mannargudi under the DMK government. These include improved drainage systems, a new bypass road, a modern bus terminus, upgraded libraries, and several bridge constructions. "Mannargudi voters will remember and reward the schemes and development brought by our Dravidian-model government," Rajaa told media representatives during campaign interactions.
DMK leaders believe their alliance's organizational strength combined with Rajaa's personal influence will prevent substantial drift of younger voters toward TVK. In what promises to be an exceptionally tight race, party strategists hope that even a minor split in opposition votes caused by Sasikala's presence could ultimately tip the electoral balance in their favor, allowing Rajaa to secure another term representing this politically significant Cauvery delta constituency.
