Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy Skips BJP Alliance Talks for Second Time
In a significant political development in Puducherry, All India NR Congress (AINRC) founder and Chief Minister N Rangasamy skipped seat-sharing discussions with Union Minister Mansukh L Mandaviya for the second consecutive day on Thursday. This move comes as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) showed reluctance to drop its ally, the Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi (LJK), founded by lottery baron Santiago Martin's son Jose Charles Martin.
Rangasamy's Demands and Evasive Actions
Rangasamy has been firm in his demand for an assurance on statehood for Puducherry, a key condition for the alliance. On Wednesday, while Mandaviya waited at a hotel to resume talks, the chief minister left for the ashram of the late self-proclaimed godman Appa Paithiyasami in Salem. He returned the same night but, upon learning that Mandaviya was still present, deputed a team led by Public Works Minister K Lakshminarayanan to hold talks. Rangasamy then embarked on a pilgrimage to Tiruchendur, further delaying negotiations.
Criticism from LJK and AINRC's Contingency Plans
Jose Charles Martin of LJK criticized Rangasamy, stating it was inappropriate for him to travel during crucial alliance talks. In response, AINRC sources revealed that the party has prepared a list of prospective candidates for all 30 constituencies, ready to contest the polls alone if necessary. Additionally, they are contemplating an alliance with actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) should the BJP fail to meet their demands, highlighting the fluidity of political alignments in the region.
Opposition Struggles and Election Timeline Pressure
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress-DMK camp has also failed to reach a seat-sharing agreement, with both parties engaged in a tussle over leadership of the alliance in Puducherry. With just two working days remaining for filing nomination papers, parties in both camps are hopeful that the current impasse will clear soon. The urgency is palpable as the election deadline approaches, adding pressure to resolve these political standoffs.
Broader Implications for Puducherry Politics
This series of events underscores the complex dynamics at play in Puducherry's political landscape. Rangasamy's insistence on statehood and opposition to LJK reflect deeper regional aspirations and alliance tensions. The potential shift towards TVK indicates a strategic pivot that could reshape electoral outcomes. As negotiations continue, the outcome will significantly impact the upcoming elections and the future governance of Puducherry.
