Protests erupted across Haryana on Friday over Bharatiya Janata Party Rajya Sabha member Rekha Sharma's alleged derogatory remarks against former Chief Minister Chaudhary Bhajan Lal. Supporters of Bhajan Lal and his son Kuldeep Bishnoi lodged formal complaints in at least 16 districts, demanding the registration of a First Information Report and strict legal action against the MP.
Complaints Filed Across Districts
Complaints were submitted to police authorities in Bhiwani, Fatehabad, Gurugram, Jhajjar, Jind, Kaithal (specifically Kalayat), Karnal, Kurukshetra, Mahendragarh, Nuh, Ambala, Panchkula, Panipat, Sonipat, Yamunanagar, and Charkhi Dadri. Protesters warned that they would intensify their agitation if action was delayed, with plans to file more complaints in the coming days.
Nature of the Remarks
According to the complainants, Sharma used offensive language during a public event, reportedly referring to Bhajan Lal as a "badmash" (a derogatory term). This statement hurt the sentiments of his supporters and disrespected his political legacy. The protesters termed the remarks condemnable and stated that such language undermines public decorum and social harmony. They demanded legal action under relevant sections of the law.
The agitation reflects the deep respect Bhajan Lal commands among his followers, who view his contributions to Haryana's development as significant. The incident has sparked a political row, with opposition parties also criticizing the BJP MP's conduct. Authorities are yet to respond to the complaints, but the growing pressure suggests the matter may escalate if not addressed promptly.
