Preeti Kamkar Elected Belagavi Mayor, Hanumanth Kongali Deputy

Preeti Kamkar Makes History as Belagavi's First Weaver Community Mayor

In a significant political development, Preeti Vinayak Kamkar was elected as the mayor of the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) for its 24th term on Wednesday. Simultaneously, Hanumanth Kongali was chosen to serve as the deputy mayor, marking a decisive victory for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the municipal body.

Breaking from Tradition: BJP's Strategic Move

Historically, the mayor and deputy mayor posts in Belagavi were allocated through a power-sharing arrangement between Maratha and Kannadiga representatives over the previous three terms. This election cycle, however, saw the BJP allocate both positions exclusively to Kannadigas, signaling a strategic shift in the party's approach to local governance and community representation.

The mayor's position was specifically reserved for a woman from the general category, while the deputy mayor's post was designated for the general category as well. This framework set the stage for a contested election that ultimately underscored the BJP's organizational strength in the region.

Mayoral Election: A Clear Mandate for Kamkar

Preeti Kamkar, fielded by the BJP from ward 21, faced opposition candidate Khurshida Dadapeer Mulla from ward 52. The election results were unequivocal, with Kamkar securing an impressive 39 votes against Mulla's 18, winning by a substantial margin of 21 votes.

Among the 59 voting members, including MLA Abhay Patil and MLC Sabanna Talawar, two members chose to remain neutral. This abstention did little to affect the outcome, as Kamkar's support base proved robust and well-organized.

Deputy Mayor Contest: Kongali's Convincing Victory

The race for deputy mayor featured Hanumanth Kongali, a BJP member from ward No. 46, competing against Modinsab Matwale of the Congress from ward No. 12. Kongali emerged victorious with 39 votes, while Matwale garnered 20, resulting in a decisive 19-vote margin for the BJP candidate.

Election officer Janaki KM, who serves as the regional commissioner, formally declared both Kamkar and Kongali as the elected mayor and deputy mayor, respectively, cementing their roles in the city's administrative leadership.

Community Representation and Political Dynamics

Preeti Kamkar's election is particularly noteworthy as she belongs to the Devang community, traditionally associated with weaving. Community leaders have hailed her victory, asserting that she is the first mayor from the weavers' community to lead any city corporation in Karnataka, marking a milestone in regional political representation.

Interestingly, the deputy mayor's post saw last-minute political maneuvering. Until Tuesday evening, corporator Santosh Padnekar was considered the frontrunner. However, pressure from the Lingayat community prompted BJP functionaries to pivot, ultimately selecting advocate Hanumanth Kongali for the position. To balance this social engineering, the party appointed Padnekar as the leader of the ruling group, ensuring broader inclusivity within its ranks.

Voter Turnout and Absenteeism

The electoral process involved 65 eligible voters, including MPs and MLAs. Notably, six voters were absent during the election, comprising three MPs and three MLAs. Their absence, however, did not impact the overall results, as the BJP's candidates secured comfortable majorities among the present members.

This election underscores the BJP's continued dominance in Belagavi's political landscape, while also highlighting the party's adaptive strategies in managing community interests and consolidating power at the municipal level.
