Major Fire Incident at Ponda General Store Results in Significant Loss
A devastating fire broke out at a general store located in Wadakade-Usgao, within the Ponda taluka, late on Saturday evening, leading to the destruction of numerous items, including essential foodgrains. The incident has resulted in an estimated financial loss of approximately Rs 5 lakh, causing distress to the local community and business owner.
Fire Details and Response Efforts
According to Subhash D Naik, the sub-officer at the Ponda central fire station who led the firefighting team, the fire ignited when the shop was closed and unattended. A vigilant passer-by noticed smoke billowing from the locked premises and promptly alerted nearby neighbors, who then informed the Ponda fire station to initiate emergency response measures.
Firefighters battled the intense flames for around two hours, utilizing two fire tenders and spraying approximately 20,000 liters of water to successfully control and extinguish the fire. The efforts were challenging due to the shop's closed state and the nature of the combustible materials inside.
Impact on the Shop Owner
The shop owner, Sunil Prabhu, was at his home during the time of the incident and was not present at the store. The fire has caused substantial damage to his business, with the loss of inventory and potential disruption to local supply chains for everyday goods.
This incident highlights the importance of fire safety measures in commercial establishments, especially in areas storing flammable items like foodgrains. Authorities are likely to investigate the cause of the fire to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
