Pune Municipal Corporation Postpones Decision on Key Flyover Funding
The standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to postpone the funding approval for a significant flyover project connecting Chandni Chowk to Bhugaon. This decision was made during a meeting held on Friday, as officials emphasized the necessity for a thorough financial assessment before committing to the initiative.
Project Overview and Strategic Importance
According to PMC officials, the proposed project is not just a single flyover but a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade. It includes the construction of flyovers, grade separators, and extensive road widening efforts. This ambitious plan is expected to revolutionize connectivity in Pune's rapidly developing western corridor, which has been experiencing a surge in both population and traffic density.
The improved infrastructure is designed to serve as a critical link for several key areas, including the Hinjewadi IT Park, the Mumbai–Goa Highway, and the proposed PMRDA Ring Road. Rajesh Bankar, head of PMC's road department, stated, "There has been a principle approval to the initiative. However, many projects were being discussed for which PMC has to take future financial liability. The approval of the flyover project would be given after detailed analysis of all these projects."
Addressing Population Growth and Traffic Challenges
PMC officials highlighted the urgency of this project by pointing to the dramatic population growth in the surrounding areas. Currently, the population along the route is approximately 90,000, but projections indicate it could soar to 2–3 lakh in the coming years. To accommodate this expansion and alleviate existing traffic bottlenecks, the plan proposes widening the existing road from 10.30 metres to an impressive 60 metres.
The administration has outlined a phased approach to the road improvements. In Phase I, infrastructural works valued at Rs 67.85 crore will be completed. This includes constructing a grade separator at the PVPIT College junction, along with a service road and the main carriageway in the vicinity.
Phase II Details and Future Discussions
Phase II of the project, with an estimated cost of Rs 135.76 crore, involves more extensive constructions. It will feature an 870-metre flyover at Ambrosia Chowk and Patil Nagar Chowk, as well as a 30-metre-long and 70-metre-wide bridge over the Ramnadi River, as detailed in the project report.
Shrinath Bhimale, chairman of the standing committee, commented on the deferral, saying, "We were seeking more details from the administration on this initiative. The project would again be discussed in the next meeting." This indicates that while the funding decision has been delayed, the project remains a priority for future deliberations.
The postponement reflects PMC's cautious approach to financial planning, ensuring that all aspects of the city's infrastructure development are carefully evaluated before committing substantial resources.
