Patna High Court Grants Bail to JD(U) MLA Anant Singh in Murder Case
The Patna High Court on Thursday granted bail to Janata Dal (United) leader Anant Singh in connection with the murder of Jan Suraaj supporter Dularchand Yadav. This development marks a significant turn in a high-profile case that has gripped Bihar's political landscape.
Arrest and Election Victory Amid Controversy
According to news agency ANI, Singh was arrested ahead of polling in last year's Bihar Assembly elections along with two associates, Manikant Thakur and Ranjeet Ram. Despite his incarceration, Singh contested and won the Mokama assembly seat in Patna district by a substantial margin of 28,206 votes. He defeated Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Veena Devi, wife of political rival Surajbhan Singh, who secured 63,210 votes.
Following his electoral triumph, Anant Singh took oath as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the Bihar Assembly. In a gesture of respect, he touched the feet of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to seek blessings before the ceremony.
The Fatal Clash and Investigation Details
The case stems from a violent incident on October 30, when Dularchand Yadav was killed during a clash between supporters of two candidates in Mokama. Anant Singh was accused of orchestrating the killing and was subsequently arrested on the night of November 1.
However, the investigation took a complex turn when Bihar Director General of Police Vinay Kumar stated that the post-mortem report indicated the death was due to cardiac and respiratory failure, not a gunshot injury. "A bullet mark was found on the leg of the deceased, but it was not the cause of death. The primary cause was determined to be cardiac and respiratory failure," DGP Vinay Kumar clarified.
Administrative Actions and Political Context
In response to the incident, two Station House Officers were suspended in connection with the case. Officials confirmed that Ghoswari SHO Madhusudan Kumar and Bhadaur SHO Ravi Ranjan faced disciplinary action.
The Mokama contest was particularly notable as a battle between two political strongmen—Anant Singh and Surajbhan Singh—who have long dominated the region's politics. This case unfolded against the backdrop of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, where the National Democratic Alliance secured a landslide victory, winning 202 out of 243 seats. The Mahagathbandhan managed just 35 seats, with the ruling alliance crossing the 200-seat mark for the second time after achieving 206 seats in 2010.
The bail decision by the Patna High Court adds another chapter to this politically charged case, raising questions about legal proceedings and their intersection with electoral politics in Bihar.
