Palamu District Administration Intensifies Firearms Monitoring Ahead of Civic Polls
In a decisive move to ensure peaceful civic body elections, the Palamu district administration has significantly enhanced its vigilance over licensed firearms across the district. This action comes as the model code of conduct (MCC) is now in full effect for the upcoming local body polls.
Comprehensive Surveillance on Licensed Arms
According to official records, there are a total of 1,182 licensed firearms distributed throughout Palamu district. The administration is implementing strict measures to prevent any celebratory, intimidatory, or flamboyant displays of these weapons during the election period.
Palamu Superintendent of Police Reeshma Ramesan emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, "Police are keeping a close watch on all arms license holders. We will review each case to take appropriate steps as per the need in the wake of elections."
Election Schedule and Distribution Details
Polling for the civic body elections is scheduled to take place on February 23 across multiple urban local bodies:
- Medininagar Municipal Corporation
- Bishrampur Nagar Parishad
- Nagar panchayats in Chhaterpur, Harihurganj, and Hussainabad
The distribution of licensed firearms across these areas reveals significant numbers:
- Medininagar: 601 licensed arms holders
- Bishrampur: 68 licensed arms holders
- Chhaterpur: 43 licensed firearms holders
- Harihurganj: 37 licensed firearms holders
- Hussainabad: 118 licensed firearms holders
All these arms license holders fall under the jurisdiction of their respective police stations, facilitating coordinated monitoring efforts.
Strict Compliance Requirements
As per established election norms, all licensed firearm holders are required to deposit their weapons at their respective police stations during the election period. This measure aims to prevent any potential misuse or intimidation during the democratic process.
However, the administration has provided a recourse for those who believe they have compelling reasons to retain their firearms. Individuals who deem it imperative to keep their weapons can file a review petition before the designated screening committee for consideration.
The district administration's proactive approach underscores their commitment to maintaining law and order during this crucial electoral period, ensuring that the civic body elections proceed smoothly and without incident.
