Odisha MLA Residential Complex on Track for June 30 Completion

Bhubaneswar: The long-awaited MLA residential complex in the state capital is poised for completion by the end of June, with Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan setting a firm deadline of June 30 after a comprehensive review of the project on Wednesday. The minister conducted an extensive site inspection, assessing progress across the sprawling development and issuing clear directives to senior officials and the executing agency to accelerate the remaining construction activities.

Project Specifications and Infrastructure Details

The ambitious housing project comprises six modern towers containing a total of 300 residential flats. The unit distribution includes 105 Type-7 apartments and 195 Type-6 apartments, designed to accommodate 130 legislators and 170 senior government officials. This strategic allocation aims to provide upgraded living quarters for key administrative personnel in proximity to the Odisha legislative assembly.

Beyond the residential towers, the complex will feature comprehensive infrastructure including a dedicated sewage treatment plant, innovative groundwater conservation measures, and an expansive green belt to enhance environmental sustainability. Official discussions during the review also focused on plans for constructing a 50-room clubhouse facility to host guests and official functions.

Redevelopment of Historic MLA Colony Area

The new residential complex is emerging on a significant site near the state legislative assembly, following the demolition of outdated government quarters and the previous single- and double-storey buildings that once housed MLAs. This redevelopment initiative represents a substantial upgrade in housing infrastructure for both legislators and senior government officials within the historically important MLA colony precinct.

The state cabinet has sanctioned more than Rs 500 crore for this transformative project, reflecting the government's commitment to modernizing administrative living facilities. However, the development previously faced criticism over sluggish progress, prompting Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy to visit the site in November 2024 and express dissatisfaction with the construction pace.

Ministerial Review and Accelerated Timeline

During Wednesday's crucial review meeting, Minister Harichandan was joined by key stakeholders including Ekamra MLA Babu Singh, Works Department Principal Secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, and numerous other officials. "With construction now moving at an accelerated pace, the government is targeting completion of this long-awaited residential complex by the end of June," confirmed an official who participated in the review session.

The official further elaborated: "Once finished, the project is expected to provide upgraded accommodation and supporting infrastructure in one of the most important administrative zones of the state capital. This development will significantly enhance the living conditions for those serving in Odisha's legislative and executive branches."

The renewed focus on timely completion comes after previous delays, with the current push reflecting the administration's determination to deliver modern housing solutions that match the growing needs of state governance. The complex's strategic location adjacent to legislative facilities ensures convenient access for lawmakers while creating an integrated administrative residential community in Bhubaneswar's political heart.
