Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar conducted a detailed review of the facilities and conservation initiatives at the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, widely known as Patna zoo, on Thursday. The visit aimed to assess the well-being of the animals and the overall development of the popular tourist spot.
Focus on Wildlife Care and Visitor Experience
Accompanied by a team of senior officials, the Chief Minister took stock of the healthcare arrangements, daily routines, and environmental conservation measures in place for the wildlife and birds. He directed the concerned officials to ensure efficient maintenance of all facilities and proper care for the animals. Expressing his satisfaction with the extensive sapling plantation inside the park's premises, Kumar emphasized the need to upgrade amenities for visitors.
He specifically asked for better facilities to be provided for children and tourists. In a move to boost environmental education, the CM instructed officials to maximize visits from school students, helping the younger generation develop awareness about wildlife and conservation.
Reviving Attractions and Development Plans
During the inspection, Nitish Kumar called for the earliest possible restart of the toy train service, a popular attraction that has been non-operational. Reflecting on the park's progress, he mentioned, “We have visited the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park several times and many facilities were developed here.” He further urged officials to expedite work on the master plan formulated for the park's holistic development.
A highlight of the visit was the naming of a newborn zebra calf as 'Samriddhi'. This birth is significant as it occurred after a gap of nearly 17 years at the Patna zoo. An official present linked this success to the state government's efforts, stating, “The birth of a zebra baby after about 17 years is the result of efforts being made for better health management of wildlife.”
A Hub for Conservation and Education
According to a communiqué from the Chief Minister's Office, the Patna zoo spans 153 acres and functions as a vital centre for wildlife conservation, research, and public education. The park attracts over 23 lakh visitors annually, including a substantial number of students. It is home to 1,122 animals representing more than 93 species, such as the rhinoceros, gharial, giraffe, tiger, and various deer. Notably, more than 80% of the zoo's area is under green cover, contributing to a natural habitat.
The officials who accompanied the CM included Principal Secretary to the CM Deepak Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary of the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department Anand Kishor, District Magistrate Thiyagarajan SM, and Park Director Hemant Patil. Before concluding his visit, the Chief Minister acknowledged the greetings from visitors in the park with a wave.
