Nitish Kumar Inaugurates Construction of Rs 542 Crore Underground Tunnel Between Bihar and Patna Museums

In a significant move to boost cultural infrastructure, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday inaugurated the start of construction for an underground tunnel connecting Bihar Museum and Patna Museum in Patna. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 542 crore, was launched as Nitish pressed the button of a construction machine, marking the beginning of this ambitious endeavor. He directed officials to complete the work expeditiously, emphasizing the need for timely execution.

Heritage Corridor: A First-of-Its-Kind Project in India

The 1.5-kilometer subterranean passage, described as a "Heritage Corridor," is designed to create a world-class cultural experience by enabling seamless movement between the two institutions. Officials briefed the Chief Minister on the construction process and expected timeline, highlighting that this is the first project of its kind in the country to link two major museums through an underground corridor. This initiative aims to enhance visitor convenience and promote tourism in the region.

Nitish Kumar's Directives for Enhanced Facilities and Traffic Management

Issuing detailed instructions, Nitish Kumar stressed that special care must be taken to ensure the work is completed "in a better manner and at the earliest." He elaborated on the benefits, stating, "Once completed, people will be able to easily move from one place to another to view the exhibits displayed at Bihar Museum and Patna Museum." Anticipating a significant rise in footfall, he added, "Keeping in mind that the number of tourists will increase significantly, adequate arrangements for parking and other necessary facilities should also be ensured." Furthermore, he emphasized that the tunnel should be built to avoid any disruption to traffic movement on Nehru Path, ensuring smooth urban flow.

Review of Museum Operations and Ongoing Redevelopment Projects

After the launch event, Nitish Kumar toured the Bihar Museum, where Director General Anjani Kumar Singh provided updates on new exhibits, current tourist numbers, parking arrangements, and available facilities. The Chief Minister reviewed this information and issued necessary directions to officials to optimize operations. Additionally, he inspected ongoing redevelopment work in front of the Bihar Museum, which includes the construction of 60 residences and an Officers’ Hostel campus, along with a park. Nitish urged officials to speed up these projects, noting, "It had always been our desire that the old structure be demolished and a multi-storey building be constructed, equipped with all kinds of necessary facilities."

Future Plans for Housing and Recreational Spaces

Nitish Kumar highlighted the broader vision for the area, stating that the new multi-storey building along Nehru Path would improve housing options for residents. He also called for the development of a well-designed park adjacent to the building, remarking, "A well-designed park should be constructed alongside it so that people visiting the museum can enjoy it as well." This integrated approach aims to create a holistic environment that combines cultural, residential, and recreational elements, fostering community engagement and boosting local tourism.
