Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Files Nomination for Fourth Term as JD(U) National President
Patna: In a significant political development, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday formally filed his nomination papers for election as the national president of the Janata Dal (United) party for the fourth consecutive term, covering the period from 2025 to 2028. The nomination process is widely anticipated to proceed unopposed, solidifying his leadership role within the party.
Nomination Process and Key Details
Interestingly, Nitish Kumar did not travel to Delhi to personally submit his nomination papers. Instead, a delegation of senior party leaders presented the documents to the party's returning officer, Anil Kumar Hegde, a former Rajya Sabha member. This move underscores the procedural nature of the election, given the lack of expected opposition.
The delegation included the party's working president and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Kumar Jha, state minister Shrawan Kumar, and MLC Sanjay Kumar Gandhi, along with other prominent party figures. They officially handed over the nomination papers to Hegde, as per the announcement from the party's central office.
Election Schedule and Expectations
According to the established election schedule, the last date for filing nomination papers is set for March 22, followed by scrutiny on March 23. The deadline for withdrawal of candidature is March 24. It is strongly expected that no other candidate will file nomination papers over the next three days, making Nitish Kumar's election virtually certain.
In the unlikely event that another candidate emerges, a formal election would be conducted on March 27. However, political analysts and party insiders consider this scenario highly improbable, given Nitish Kumar's dominant position within the JD(U).
Historical Context and Leadership Role
Nitish Kumar, who was recently elected as a Rajya Sabha member on March 16 this year, has a storied history with the party's presidency. He first assumed the role in April 2016, taking over from senior party leader Sharad Yadav. He was subsequently re-elected in October 2019.
In a strategic move, he later handed over the post to former Rajya Sabha member R C P Singh in November the following year, only to resume the presidency from Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, in December 2023. This marks his return to the helm for what is set to be his fourth term.
Future Implications and Family Involvement
As a Rajya Sabha member and with plans to relinquish the chief minister's post, Nitish Kumar is poised to focus more intently on guiding the central and state units of the JD(U). This shift could enhance his influence in national politics, free from the day-to-day pressures of state governance.
Meanwhile, his son, Nishant Kumar, has already become an active party member and is reportedly seeking a significant role within the organization. Nishant has announced plans to embark on a statewide tour, indicating a growing involvement in party affairs and potential future leadership aspirations.
The nomination filing reinforces Nitish Kumar's enduring grip on the JD(U) and sets the stage for his continued leadership as the party prepares for upcoming political challenges and electoral battles.
