Senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Maharashtra minister Dharmaraobaba Atram on Friday sparked speculation of a fresh political realignment in the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) faction. Atram claimed that several Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from the rival camp have been in touch with the main NCP, hinting at possible defections.
Political Turmoil in Maharashtra
The development comes amid an ongoing crisis within the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, which has seen internal fissures and leadership challenges. Atram's remarks suggest that the instability might be spilling over into the NCP (SP), which was formed after a split in the original NCP led by Sharad Pawar.
Speaking to reporters, Atram stated, "Several MPs and MLAs from the Sharad Pawar-led faction are in constant communication with our party. They are unhappy with the current state of affairs and are exploring options." He did not disclose names but emphasized that the NCP remains united under the leadership of Ajit Pawar.
Implications for State Politics
Political analysts view this as a strategic move by the Ajit Pawar-led NCP to consolidate its position in Maharashtra ahead of upcoming elections. The NCP (SP), which has been struggling to maintain its base, could face further erosion if key lawmakers switch sides.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) crisis has already created a ripple effect across Maharashtra's political landscape, with parties realigning to strengthen their positions. Atram's statement is seen as an attempt to capitalize on the uncertainty within the opposition ranks.
Meanwhile, the Sharad Pawar camp has dismissed Atram's claims as "wishful thinking." A senior NCP (SP) leader said, "Our party is strong and united. Such statements are baseless and aimed at creating confusion."
The coming weeks are likely to witness intense political maneuvering as both factions vie for supremacy. With the state assembly elections on the horizon, every move counts in the battle for Maharashtra's political future.
