Massive Road Blockade in Namakkal Demands Immediate Safety Measures

NAMAKKAL: More than 100 local residents staged a dramatic protest on Thursday, completely blocking the crucial Tiruchengode-Devanankurichi Road for over an hour. Their demand was clear and urgent: the immediate installation of speed bumps and proper street lighting along this dangerous stretch of roadway.

Tragic Accident Sparks Public Outrage

The protest erupted following a fatal road accident on Wednesday night that claimed the life of Kuppusamy, 55, the union secretary of the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) political party. The tragic incident occurred around 8 PM near the Devanankurichi bridge bus stop when Kuppusamy, who was crossing the road on his two-wheeler, collided with another motorcycle carrying two young men.

"The accident happened so suddenly," explained one eyewitness. "Both vehicles were traveling at considerable speed, and there was no proper lighting to help anyone see what was coming."

Chaos on the Roads as Traffic Diverted

The road blockade created significant disruption throughout the area, with police forced to divert all traffic, including school vehicles, through alternative routes. The protest effectively brought normal movement to a standstill as villagers refused to accept Kuppusamy's body until their safety demands were addressed.

"We have been asking for speed bumps and streetlights for years," said one protester. "This road has become a death trap, especially at night. How many more lives must be lost before authorities take action?"

Details of the Fatal Collision

The accident involved two motorcycles with devastating consequences:

  • Kuppusamy (55): NTK union secretary who was crossing the road on his two-wheeler
  • Prakash (26): Rider of the other motorcycle traveling from Tiruchengode
  • Ajay (26): Pillion rider on Prakash's motorcycle

All three men suffered serious injuries in the collision. Local residents immediately rushed to the scene and transported Kuppusamy to Tiruchengode Government Hospital via a 108 ambulance. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries during transit. Prakash was admitted to Namakkal Government Medical College and Hospital, while Ajay received treatment at a private hospital in Tiruchengode.

Community Voices Safety Concerns

According to NTK election candidate Revathi, the Tiruchengode to Kumarapalayam road experiences heavy traffic daily, with hundreds of students using the route. "There are absolutely no streetlights or speed bumps near the Devanankurichi bridge bus stop," she emphasized. "This creates extremely dangerous conditions, particularly at night."

Revathi highlighted an additional concerning factor: "There are numerous TASMAC liquor shops along this road. Many people drive after consuming alcohol at night, making road accidents frighteningly common in this area. The combination of darkness, speeding vehicles, and impaired drivers creates a perfect storm for tragedy."

Police Intervention and Promises

The tense standoff finally ended when Tiruchengode rural police inspector Nagalakshmi personally engaged with the protesters. After hearing their grievances, she provided a formal assurance that authorities would install both speed bumps and streetlights along the problematic stretch of road.

"The police have given us their word," stated one community leader after the protest concluded. "Now we expect immediate action. We cannot wait for another life to be lost on this dangerous road. Proper safety measures should have been implemented years ago."

The protest has brought renewed attention to road safety infrastructure deficiencies in rural Tamil Nadu, particularly in areas experiencing increased traffic flow without corresponding safety upgrades. Community members vow to monitor the situation closely and ensure authorities fulfill their promises without unnecessary delay.
