Nagpur Civic Chief Orders Urgent Road Repairs After Pothole Death
In a tragic incident highlighting the perilous state of roads, a 65-year-old woman lost her life after a motorcycle she was riding pillion tipped over due to a crater-like pothole in Nagpur's Khaparkheda area. The fatal accident has prompted Nagpur Municipal Corporation's standing committee chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare to issue urgent directives for monsoon preparedness and road safety measures.
Details of the Fatal Accident
Indubai Bonde, a resident of Khapa Patan, succumbed to injuries on April 13, following an accident that occurred on April 10. According to police reports, Bonde was traveling with her 25-year-old grandson Himanshu on a motorcycle towards Patansawangi when the vehicle hit a deep pothole near Tandulwani bridge under Khaparkheda police limits between 2pm and 2.30pm.
The impact caused the motorcycle to tumble, resulting in Bonde suffering grievous injuries. After receiving initial treatment at a hospital in Patansawangi, she was shifted to Nagpur for advanced care, where she died during treatment. An accidental death report has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
Civic Response and High-Level Meeting
The incident has sparked renewed concern over road safety and infrastructure neglect, particularly with the monsoon season approaching. In response, Dani-Wakhare convened a high-level meeting at the NMC headquarters on Tuesday, instructing officials from multiple development agencies to take immediate action.
Key directives issued during the meeting include:
- All ongoing construction works by NMC and allied agencies such as MahaMetro, MIHAN, National Highways Authority of India, PWD, NMRDA, and Airport Authority of India must be completed on priority to prevent water accumulation and related hazards.
- Each of NMC's 10 zones must prepare detailed reports on locations prone to rainwater accumulation.
- Other agencies are required to submit comprehensive data on their ongoing works to NMC's chief engineer immediately.
Additional Concerns and Warnings
During the meeting, ruling party leader Narendra Borkar emphasized the need for MahaMetro officials to ensure no waterlogging occurs near Metro stations and that proper drainage systems are functional. Vijay Zalke, deputy chairman of the water supply committee, cautioned NMRDA officials to avoid obstructing the natural water flows of Nag and Pora rivers, warning that disruptions could lead to flooding in residential areas.
Officials were also instructed to implement proper drainage planning at all construction sites. This civic push comes amid rising public anger over poor road conditions, with the Khaparkheda tragedy serving as a grim reminder of the consequences of neglect.
The incident underscores the urgent need for improved infrastructure maintenance and proactive measures to enhance road safety, especially in peri-urban areas where such hazards are prevalent.
