Nagpur Division's Year-Long Crackdown on Illegal Mining Yields Massive Results
Authorities in the Nagpur division have revealed the staggering scale of illegal minor mineral extraction and transportation across the region, following an intensive year-long enforcement campaign. The crackdown, spanning from April 2025 to March 31, 2026, resulted in 587 criminal cases, 158 arrests, and penalties amounting to a colossal Rs55.39 crore. This data underscores the widespread violations and the administration's determined efforts to combat them.
Coordinated Enforcement Actions and Recovery Efforts
In an official statement, Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari detailed that action was taken in 2,478 cases through district-level flying squads and strategically placed check posts. "Strict action has been initiated against illegal excavation and transport of minor minerals through special drives across the division," Bidari emphasized, highlighting the intensified enforcement over the past year. Of the total penalties imposed, Rs20.15 crore has been successfully recovered so far, indicating ongoing efforts to secure these funds.
Seizures and Nature of Violations
The enforcement operations led to the seizure of 1,512 vehicles and 10 pieces of machinery directly linked to illicit mining activities. Most violations involved the unauthorized extraction of sand, murum, and soil, reflecting persistent and significant pressure on the region's natural resources. These materials are often exploited for construction and other industrial uses, driving the illegal trade.
District-Wise Breakdown of Cases and Penalties
The district-wise data provides a clear picture of the enforcement outcomes:
- Bhandara: Reported the highest number of cases at 672, with 637 related specifically to sand mining. These resulted in 363 offences leading to penalties of approximately Rs5 crore, with Rs2.82 crore recovered and 104 arrests made.
- Gondia: Recorded 641 cases, with penalties totaling Rs3.58 crore, of which Rs3.29 crore has been recovered.
- Nagpur District: Saw 261 cases resulting in penalties of Rs4.32 crore, with recoveries reaching Rs3.79 crore.

Administrative Push and Future Implications
The enforcement, carried out through coordinated operations at check posts and by mobile squads, highlights both the extensive scale of illegal mining and the robust administrative push to curb it. This crackdown not only aims to penalize violators but also serves as a deterrent, signaling a zero-tolerance approach towards environmental degradation and resource exploitation. The recovery of significant penalty amounts further reinforces the commitment to accountability and sustainable resource management in the Nagpur division.
