Mysuru Farmers Stage Major Protest Against NIMHANS Hospital Construction on Fertile Land
In a significant demonstration of dissent, hundreds of farmers and multiple agricultural organizations gathered in Mysuru on Thursday to vehemently oppose the proposed construction of a NIMHANS hospital at Gudumadanahalli village. The protest took place directly in front of the deputy commissioner's office, where participants raised loud slogans condemning the Mysuru district administration's decision.
Farmers Decry Loss of Livelihood and Fertile Agricultural Land
The core grievance of the protesters centers on the identification of highly fertile agricultural land for the hospital project. Farmers emphasized that approximately 80 families depend entirely on this notified land for their livelihood, having cultivated two crops annually on it for over six decades. They described the soil as exceptionally productive, supporting not only diverse agriculture but also livestock rearing essential to their economic stability.
During the protest, a detailed memorandum was formally submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urgently requesting the government to reconsider the proposed site. The farmers expressed their frustration, questioning whether authorities truly comprehend the critical importance of preserving agricultural land for food security and rural sustenance.
Support for Hospital at Alternative Location, Opposition to Current Site
While the protesters clarified that they support the establishment of a NIMHANS hospital in principle, they strongly advocated for selecting an appropriate alternative location that does not compromise fertile farmland. Their opposition is specifically targeted at the Gudumadanahalli site, which they argue would irreversibly damage agricultural productivity and displace long-standing farming communities.
Farm leader Badagalapura Nagendra issued a stern warning to the state government, stating that no government that provokes farmers has maintained its authority historically. He asserted that any attempts to suppress the ongoing farmers' agitation would prove futile, highlighting the determination of the agricultural community to protect their land and way of life.
Allegations of Police Atrocities During Agitation
The protest was further marred by serious allegations from the farmers, who claimed that local police committed atrocities against them during the agitation. These accusations add a layer of tension to the already heated dispute, raising concerns about the handling of peaceful demonstrations and the rights of protesters.
