MVA Consolidates Power in Sangli by Appointing Defectors to Key Committee Posts

In a strategic political maneuver, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance has rewarded councillors from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Shiv Sena who defected to support the coalition. These members have been elected as chairpersons of crucial committees within the Sangli Zilla Parishad (ZP), significantly strengthening the MVA's administrative control in the region.

Unopposed Victory Secures Committee Leadership

All four MVA nominees were elected unopposed after the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti alliance failed to field any candidates for these positions. Political observers suggest the Mahayuti likely withdrew to avoid a public defeat, recognizing that the MVA now commands a clear majority bolstered by defectors from the BJP's own partner parties.

The newly appointed chairpersons include:

  • Savitri Patil (NCP) – Chairperson of the Education Committee
  • Prithviraj Patil (Shiv Sena) – Chairman of the Public Works Committee
  • Dadasaheb Kolekar (NCP-SP) – Chairman of the Social Welfare Committee
  • Snehal More (NCP-SP) – Chairperson of the Women and Child Welfare Committee

Strategic Appointments with Substantial Authority

These appointments carry significant weight as the committees oversee major development programs and wield considerable power over budgetary expenditures. The MVA had initially won 30 seats in the ZP elections held last month, falling just one seat short of a clear majority. However, during subsequent elections for the President and Vice-President positions, the alliance's strength increased to 34 members.

Prithviraj Patil of the Shiv Sena, who had previously abstained from voting, received the Public Works Committee chairmanship for his eventual support of the MVA candidates. Similarly, Savitri Ravi Patil—wife of NCP leader Ravi Tamangouda Patil—was rewarded with a leadership role after backing the MVA during critical votes.

Contrast with Earlier BJP Predictions

The unopposed victory stands in stark contrast to earlier claims made by BJP leader and Sangli guardian minister Chandrakant Patil, who had confidently predicted a "miracle" victory for the Mahayuti alliance. Despite his assertions, no BJP candidates filed nominations for the committee positions, leading election authorities to declare the MVA candidates elected without opposition.

Political Leaders Hail Growing Support

NCP (SP) MLA Jayant Patil celebrated the outcome, stating, "Our support has grown from 34 in the presidential election to 37 now. Councillors from other parties have extended their unconditional support to us, ensuring this alliance will last its full five-year term."

Congress MLA Vishwajeet Kadam added that the cross-party support represented a natural progression. "We have worked together for a long time and share a comfort level. Furthermore, these councillors won their seats by defeating the BJP, so it is only logical that they chose to support the MVA," he explained.

The appointments mark a significant consolidation of power for the MVA in Sangli district, demonstrating how strategic political rewards can secure loyalty and create stable governing coalitions at the local level.
