Residents of several key sectors in Mohali can finally look forward to a permanent solution for their persistent waterlogging troubles. The Punjab Local Government Department has granted formal approval for a crucial drainage project worth Rs 7 crore, aimed at providing relief to areas like Sector 70, Sector 71, Matour, Phase 7, and Phase 3B2.
Project Details and Long-Awaited Approval
The core of the approved scheme involves laying a large-diameter underground pipeline stretching from Matour Chowk to N-Chowk. This infrastructure is designed to ensure the proper disposal of both natural rainwater runoff and discharge from tubewells. The project estimate, which had been pending for a significant period, received its official nod recently, paving the way for its execution.
Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi, who had been vocally advocating for the project, revealed that he had even announced a protest (dharna) outside the Local Government Department office due to the prolonged delay in clearing the proposal. "I fought a long battle for this issue," Bedi stated, acknowledging the sustained pressure from affected residents over several years.
The Root of the Waterlogging Problem
Explaining the technical cause behind the chronic flooding, Deputy Mayor Bedi outlined a critical infrastructure flaw. During the monsoon season, natural water flow from the rear side of the aforementioned areas gets obstructed because of raised roads ahead. This blockage prevents drainage, leading to severe water accumulation.
The situation is compounded by water pumped out from low-lying areas via tubewells. "Water pumped out through tubewells from low-lying areas could not flow further and instead entered residential houses, leading to heavy losses for residents," Bedi elaborated. This dual challenge of rainwater and tubewell discharge has plagued the neighbourhoods for a long time.
A Promised Permanent Solution and Widespread Relief
With the approval in place, authorities are confident that the new pipeline will serve as a comprehensive and lasting fix. The conduit will be capable of carrying both sources of water, effectively channelling them away from residential zones.
"This project will not only benefit Sectors 70 and 71 but will also bring relief to residents of Phase 7, Phase 3B2 and Matour. People across the area will finally be able to live without the fear of waterlogging during rains," asserted Deputy Mayor Bedi. He expressed his gratitude to officials of the Mohali Municipal Corporation and various departments for their cooperation, noting that after several objections and months of delay, his requests were ultimately accepted. He also extended special thanks to Senior Deputy Mayor Amrik Singh Somal for his full support towards the project.
The approval, granted in January 2026, marks a significant step towards improving civic infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for thousands of residents in these Mohali sectors, who have endured property damage and inconvenience for far too long.
