The suspense over Mohali municipal corporation's mayoral post is set to end on Tuesday, with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) witnessing an internal contest between Sarabjit Singh Samana and Sunny Ahluwalia. The election for mayor, senior deputy mayor, and deputy mayor will follow the oath-taking of newly elected councillors at 3 pm.
AAP's Clear Majority
With 27 councillors, AAP holds a clear majority, making the contest largely an intra-party affair. Sources said both Samana and Ahluwalia enjoy backing from influential leaders. Samana, son of MLA Kulwant Singh, is seen as a strong local contender, while Ahluwalia is considered close to senior AAP leadership. The contest has generated interest in political circles, though party leaders maintain the final decision will come from the high command.
Other Key Posts
The newly elected House will also choose a senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor during its first meeting. The outcome is expected to shape the civic body's direction for the term.
Congress Fields Rangi
Congress has nominated Narpinder Singh Rangi for mayor. The party will contest all three key posts after a meeting of elected councillors. Rangi was chosen as the leader of the Congress councillor group. The party holds 12 seats and vows a tough fight against AAP.
