The Mizo National Front (MNF), Mizoram's principal opposition party, offered heartfelt tributes on Friday to former state governor Swaraj Kaushal, who passed away at the age of 73 following a heart attack on Thursday. Kaushal was a pivotal legal figure during the historic peace negotiations between the MNF and the Indian government.
A Trusted Legal Adviser in Peace Talks
Former Chief Minister and MNF president Zoramthanga led the tributes, recalling Kaushal's integrity and his unique position as one of the youngest individuals to become a governor. He emphasized that Kaushal was more than just a legal counsel for the MNF during the critical peace talks; he was a genuine friend to the cause of bringing stability to Mizoram.
Zoramthanga revealed a significant personal sacrifice made by Kaushal. When the MNF founder, Laldenga, was imprisoned in Tihar Jail in 1979 during the negotiation phase, Kaushal not only acted as his lawyer but also personally spent money to secure Laldenga's release on bail. This act cemented a deep bond of trust between the lawyer and the Mizo leadership.
Instrumental in Drafting the Mizo Accord
The sentiments were echoed by Renee Lalrinzuali, Laldenga's daughter and the general secretary of the MNF. She stated that Kaushal was a trusted friend not just to the party but also to her family. She highlighted his crucial professional contribution, noting that as a Supreme Court lawyer, he played an instrumental role in drafting the terms and conditions of the landmark Mizo Accord of 1986, which finally brought peace to the region.
Following Mizoram's attainment of statehood under Laldenga's leadership, Swaraj Kaushal's service to the state continued. He was appointed as Mizoram's first Advocate General. His political career later saw him serve as the Governor of Mizoram from 1990 to 1993.
Condolences from Mizoram's Leadership
In a mark of respect, Zoramthanga and Lalchhandama Ralte, the Leader of Opposition in the state legislature, sent a formal condolence message on Thursday. The message was addressed to Kaushal's daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, who is currently a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.
The tributes from the MNF leadership paint a picture of Swaraj Kaushal as a figure who transcended his official roles. He was a legal architect of peace, a benefactor in times of crisis, and a lasting friend to Mizoram during its most transformative period.
