In a significant response to a shocking crime, Karnataka Legislative Council member and chief whip Saleem Ahmed visited the victims of the Inam Veerapur honour killing incident on Sunday. The MLC met with those injured in the attack at a private hospital in Hubballi, offering support and condemning the violent act.
Condemnation of Violence and Caste System
Speaking to reporters after his hospital visit, Saleem Ahmed expressed profound distress over the nature of the crime. He highlighted the particularly tragic detail that even a child was targeted in the attack, calling the incident deeply unfortunate. Ahmed stated that the event represents a major stain on society and called for the eradication of the caste system.
"This incident is a big blot on society. The caste system must vanish, and awareness needs to be created against it," Ahmed asserted. He emphasized that necessary steps must be implemented to prevent such tragedies from happening again in the future.
Police Action and Government Response
Providing an update on the law enforcement response, Ahmed confirmed that eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the honour killing case so far. He also revealed that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has been fully briefed on the details of the case, indicating the state government's attention to the matter.
The MLC's visit and statements underscore the political and administrative focus on addressing crimes rooted in caste-based prejudices and ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
Addressing Kerala CM's Remarks on Bengaluru
During the same interaction, Saleem Ahmed also responded to comments made by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan regarding demolition activities in Bengaluru. Ahmed dismissed Vijayan's statements as politically motivated, suggesting they were timed with approaching elections.
He clarified the context of the clearing operation in question, stating, "He is talking about bulldozers and house clearances in Bengaluru. The area that was cleared is a dumping yard, not a place meant for human habitation."
Ahmed explained that the government had assigned ministers to oversee the clearing of the area and to make alternative arrangements for those affected. He alleged that people had constructed houses in the zone and were involved in illegal activities. However, from a humanitarian standpoint, Ahmed assured that the government would extend all necessary cooperation to those displaced.
