Mizoram CM Condemns Christmas Vandalism as 'Contrary to Constitutional Values'
Mizoram CM Slams Christmas Vandalism as Anti-Constitutional

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has issued a strong condemnation against a series of incidents where Christmas celebrations were disrupted by acts of vandalism in several Indian states. The Chief Minister, who leads the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) government in the Christian-majority state, labeled these actions as fundamentally opposed to the nation's constitutional ethos.

A Statement for Secularism and Peace

In a post on the social media platform X, Lalduhoma expressed his distress over the reports. He emphasized that such acts of vandalism are "contrary to the constitutional values of fraternity, secularism and freedom of religion." Highlighting the universal message of the festive season, he added, "The central message of Christmas is peace on Earth — a reminder for all of us to live with understanding, tolerance and goodwill."

Lalduhoma's political position adds significant weight to his statement, as his party is not aligned with either the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) or the Congress-led INDIA bloc, making it an independent voice on the national political landscape.

Nationwide Incidents Disrupt Festive Spirit

The Chief Minister's remarks came in response to a troubling pattern of disruptions reported in the run-up to Christmas this year across multiple states, including Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi.

In Assam, members associated with the Bajrang Dal and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) entered a diocese school that had been decorated for Christmas. Following the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on social media that those responsible had been arrested. He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to "maintaining peace, communal harmony, and ensuring the safety of all institutions and citizens across the state."

The situation in Chhattisgarh's capital, Raipur, saw further escalation. On Christmas Eve, the Magneto Mall was vandalized, leading to the arrest of seven individuals linked to the Bajrang Dal. In a subsequent protest against these arrests, Bajrang Dal members blocked roads in Raipur. This protest coincided with a bandh (shutdown) called by right-wing groups in the state, who alleged that forced religious conversions were taking place in Chhattisgarh. A local court has denied bail to the seven men arrested for the mall vandalism.

Broader Implications and Reactions

These incidents have sparked a broader conversation about religious freedom and communal harmony in India. The condemnation from the Mizoram Chief Minister, a leader from a state with a distinct cultural and religious demographic, underscores the national concern over such events.

The proactive response from some state administrations, like in Assam where arrests were made, points to official efforts to curb such disruptions. However, the protests and bandhs that followed in Chhattisgarh indicate the underlying tensions and the challenge of balancing law enforcement with social sentiment.

The series of events serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing need to uphold the constitutional principles of secularism and fraternity, especially during religious festivals that are celebrated by diverse communities across the country.
