Fire Erupts in Margao Municipal Market, Damages Two Shops

A devastating fire broke out during the pre-dawn hours on Saturday, gutting two shops inside the new municipal market in Margao. The affected establishments included a beverage shop and a tailoring unit, both of which suffered significant damage in the blaze.

Quick Response by Locals and Firefighters

The fire was first spotted by a vigilant security guard and a sopo collector, who immediately alerted the fire brigade. Firefighters rushed to the scene, but faced challenges due to the ongoing renovation of the market. To effectively douse the flames, they had to cut open the tin-sheet roof, highlighting the complexities of firefighting in under-construction areas.

Long-Pending Water Tank Project Under Scrutiny

This incident has brought renewed attention to the long-delayed construction of an overhead water tank near the market. Local vendors have consistently emphasized that this tank is essential to make the fire hydrants in the area functional, providing a reliable water source for emergency responses.

Recent revelations from the legislative assembly show that the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has been awaiting a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the chief town planner to proceed with building a 640-square-meter overhead water storage tank at the pickup stand. Despite the MMC's chief officer writing to the chief town planner to request the NOC, the necessary clearance has not yet been granted.

Growing Demand for Infrastructure Improvements

The demand to expedite the tank's construction has grown significantly louder following Saturday's fire. The two municipal markets have remained vulnerable to fire hazards for years, a concern that was starkly highlighted when a major fire broke out at the new municipal market in December 2023. Yet, adequate firefighting infrastructure has still not materialized, leaving the area at risk.

The Public Works Department (PWD) Works Division IX in Fatorda has taken up the task of laying fire hydrants and constructing the tank. However, as it turns out, the missing NOC from the Town and Country Planning (TCP) department has become a major stumbling block, delaying critical safety enhancements.

This fire incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved fire safety measures in Margao's municipal markets, with the pending water tank project being a key component in safeguarding the community.
