Maradu Municipality in Kochi Confronts Severe Drinking Water Shortage During Summer
The onset of summer has intensified a critical drinking water crisis in several wards of Maradu municipality, located in Kochi, Kerala. Residents are facing acute scarcity, with many alleging that the situation persists despite repeated assurances from local authorities. Worst-Affected Wards and Resident Struggles
Wards 1, 35, 23, 19, and 22 are among the areas most severely impacted by the water shortage. In these localities, residents have resorted to relying on tanker trucks for their daily drinking water needs, a temporary solution that fails to address the underlying issues. The scarcity has disrupted daily life, particularly for families with children and elderly members.
Leela Vidyadharan, a 59-year-old resident of Ward 1, described the hardships faced by the community. "Water supply is irregular, arriving only every two or three days. We are forced to walk long distances to access water from pipes, reminiscent of older times. Living on small plots of land, we lack the space to dig wells, leaving us with few options," she explained.
Athira Abu, a 29-year-old Maradu resident, echoed these concerns, noting that tanker trucks offer only partial relief. "There is no consistent water supply, even though we pay our bills regularly. With children at home during vacation, managing without reliable water has become incredibly difficult," she added.
Official Responses and Alleged Inaction
Local residents have filed numerous complaints with officials from the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) and the municipality, but the water shortage remains unresolved. In response, Maradu municipality chairperson Ajitha Nandakumar disclosed that recent meetings with KWA officials identified frequent power cuts at the Pazhoor pump house as a primary cause. This pump house is responsible for supplying water to Maradu, and low pressure due to electricity disruptions has exacerbated the scarcity.
"KWA officials assured us they would address the issue, yet the water crisis continues. Tanker water cannot serve as a permanent substitute for tap water, and we urge swift action to restore regular supply," Nandakumar stated.
Political Criticism and Community Protests
CPM leader in Maradu, A U Viju, criticized the lack of effective intervention from elected representatives, alleging a failure to prioritize the water crisis. "The situation has progressively worsened over the past five years. Despite the severe plight of residents, local MLAs or MPs have not adequately raised this issue with concerned authorities or initiated drinking water projects in the region," he asserted.
Viju further mentioned that regular marches and protests have been organized to highlight the community's grievances, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable solutions. Meanwhile, repeated attempts to contact KWA officials for comments went unanswered, adding to frustrations over transparency and accountability.
