Mangaluru City Corporation Designates 210 Authorized Auto-Rickshaw Parking Spots

The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has taken a significant step toward improving urban mobility and reducing traffic conflicts by officially identifying 210 specific locations across its 60 wards as authorized auto-rickshaw parking zones. This comprehensive initiative follows an extensive study and collaborative consultations with drivers and union representatives to address long-standing parking challenges in the city.

Comprehensive Study and Stakeholder Engagement

The process began with a detailed study conducted by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) for Mangaluru City traffic police, in close coordination with office bearers from various auto-rickshaw drivers' and owners' unions. This collaborative effort ensured that the identified parking spots would be practical and beneficial for all stakeholders involved. Based on the findings, a formal recommendation was submitted to declare a structured list of auto-rickshaw parks.

Official Approval and Flexible Implementation

The proposal was subsequently presented to the MCC council, which granted approval in 2022. MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik emphasized that the approved list is designed to be adaptable, with provisions for modifications during future road development projects. This flexibility ensures that the parking infrastructure can evolve alongside the city's ongoing urban improvements.

Recently, the revised list of auto-rickshaw parks was thoroughly discussed at a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Darshan HV, who also serves as the administrator of the MCC. This meeting underscored the administration's commitment to implementing effective traffic management solutions.

Specific Parking Allocations Across Key Locations

The designated parking spots vary in capacity to accommodate different levels of demand:

  • Kavoor-Konchadi Junction: Provision for 30-40 vehicles.
  • Kankanady Junction Railway Station: Space for 35 vehicles.
  • State Bank Junction and Lady Hill Junction (Brahmasri Narayana Guru Circle): Each location allows parking for 25 vehicles.

For most other locations, including Padavinangady, Sultan Battery, Urwa Store Junction, Urwa (opposite Canara High School), AB Shetty Circle, and two spots at Central Railway Station, the capacity is set at less than 20 vehicles. This tiered approach helps optimize space utilization across the city's diverse neighborhoods.

Addressing Historical Reductions and Future Demands

This move comes in response to persistent demands from auto-rickshaw drivers' and owners' forums, such as the Federation of Karnataka Autorickshaw Drivers Union. These groups have long advocated for an increase in parking facilities, citing the city's growing fleet of over 7,000 registered auto-rickshaws and the rising number of electric variants.

Historically, Mangaluru had 375 auto-rickshaw stands, but this number was drastically reduced to 115 due to road widening and concreting projects. The new designation of 210 authorized parks represents a substantial effort to restore and expand parking infrastructure, which is expected to mitigate conflicts among drivers and enhance overall traffic flow.

By strategically increasing the number of authorized parking spots, the MCC aims to foster a more organized and harmonious urban environment, supporting both drivers' livelihoods and the commuting public's convenience.
