A 65-year-old man made a desperate suicide attempt near the residence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday. The incident occurred in Naravaripalli village near Tirupati.
Man Consumes Pesticide During CM's Visit
Govinda Reddy, a resident of Nagireddipalli in Chittoor district, arrived at the chief minister's ancestral home during Naidu's three-day Sankranthi festival visit. The chief minister was celebrating the festival with his family, including his son and HRD minister Nara Lokesh.
Many people from across Chittoor and Tirupati districts formed queues to meet Naidu and submit their grievances. Several individuals successfully presented their representations to the chief minister on Tuesday.
What Triggered the Desperate Act?
Police reports indicate Govinda Reddy came to submit his own representation. However, he did not join the organized queue system established for visitors. Instead, he suddenly became agitated and pulled out a pesticide bottle from his possession.
Without warning, the elderly man consumed the toxic substance. Bystanders and security personnel immediately rushed him to SVRR Government General Hospital in Tirupati for emergency treatment.
Doctors later transferred him to Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences for more advanced medical care. His condition remains serious but stable under close observation.
Land Dispute Behind the Tragedy
Govinda Reddy left behind a written note explaining his actions. The note appealed to government officials to resolve long-standing land disputes affecting his family. These unresolved property issues apparently pushed him to this extreme step.
A companion named Reddeppa provided additional context to reporters. He revealed that Govinda Reddy had previously met both Chief Minister Naidu and Minister Lokesh in January of last year.
"He presented his representation then, but his land problems remained unsolved even after twelve months," Reddeppa explained. "This ongoing frustration made him determined to meet the CM one more time."
Reddeppa described the tragic sequence of events. "I dropped him near the CM's residence and went to park my motorcycle. When I returned just minutes later, he had already consumed the pesticide and lost consciousness."
Official Response and Investigation
Tirupati police issued a press statement clarifying the circumstances. Authorities confirmed they had informed Govinda Reddy about the proper queue system for meeting the chief minister. They emphasized he chose not to follow these instructions before his sudden suicide attempt.
Tirupati District Collector S Venkateshwar took immediate action following the incident. He directed medical officials to provide the best possible treatment to Govinda Reddy. The collector also promised to personally examine the man's representation regarding the land disputes.
This tragic event highlights the desperation some citizens feel when facing prolonged bureaucratic delays. It occurred during what should have been a festive family celebration for the chief minister in his native village.
The incident raises questions about grievance redressal mechanisms for ordinary citizens. Many people travel long distances hoping for personal interventions from political leaders to solve their problems.
Local authorities continue to monitor Govinda Reddy's medical condition closely. They have assured the public that his case will receive proper attention once his health stabilizes.
