West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a major street protest in Kolkata for Friday afternoon. This comes as a direct response to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) moving the Calcutta High Court against her for alleged obstruction during its raids on Thursday.
ED Action and CM's Strong Retort
The federal agency conducted searches at the office of the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) and the residence of its director, Pratik Jain. The ED has now approached the Calcutta High Court, accusing the Chief Minister of obstructing its officials during the operation.
In a fiery reaction, Mamata Banerjee framed the entire episode as "a clear case of theft." She launched a sharp counter-attack, questioning the agency's motives. "They lodged a false case against me. If they try to steal from my home, will I not try to prevent it?" she stated.
The Chief Minister made a serious allegation, claiming that crucial data was taken. "They stole everything - all data, including the SIR list," she said, drawing an analogy: "If someone tries to kill you, will you not try to defend yourself?"
Statewide Protests and Major Kolkata Rally
Following the raids and the Chief Minister's statements, Trinamool Congress (TMC) functionaries and party workers held a series of protests across the state. The main event, however, is scheduled for Friday.
A rally will commence at 2 PM from the Jadavpur 8B bus stop and proceed to Hazra Crossing in south Kolkata. The party has indicated that the entire TMC leadership will be present, with the exception of those engaged in critical SIR-related work.
Data Theft Allegation and Political Standoff
Mamata Banerjee elaborated on the significance of the allegedly seized data, linking it to public service. "Many people sought our help for SIR. Even that data has been stolen," she claimed, referring to the searches at I-PAC addresses.
She issued a clear warning, framing her protest as a justified reaction. "The more you try to disturb me, the more I will retaliate. This (the protest) is a reaction to their action," the Chief Minister asserted, setting the stage for a continued political and legal confrontation.
The situation marks a significant escalation in tensions between the ruling TMC in West Bengal and central investigative agencies, with Friday's protest poised to be a major flashpoint.
