Official government data has revealed a significant surge in vehicle registrations across Maharashtra for the year 2025. The state witnessed more than 32.7 lakh new vehicles hitting its roads, marking a sharp increase of nearly 13.5% compared to the previous year's figures.
Two-Wheelers Dominate the Registration Rush
The bulk of this vehicular influx was comprised of two-wheelers, which accounted for a staggering 22.9 lakh units. Passenger cars followed as a distant second with 5 lakh new registrations. Other vehicle categories contributed substantially to the total, including 1.4 lakh agricultural tractors, 1.3 lakh trucks, 88,352 autorickshaws, 57,159 other vehicles, and 13,346 buses.
The festive spirit of October and November clearly translated into a buying spree, as these two months recorded the highest registration numbers at 8.5 lakh vehicles. In contrast, February proved to be the slowest period, with only 1.9 lakh vehicles being registered.
Mumbai's Growing Fleet Amidst Infrastructure Strain
Within the state, the financial capital of Mumbai registered a substantial 3 lakh new vehicles in 2025. This addition comes as the megacity continues to grapple with severe and persistent challenges such as chronic traffic congestion, alarming levels of vehicular pollution, acute shortage of parking space, and deteriorating road conditions.
Of Mumbai's new registrations, around 1.88 lakh were two-wheelers and 68,379 were cars. The Wadala Regional Transport Office (RTO) led the city in processing new vehicles at 84,908, followed by Borivli RTO (78,232), Tardeo RTO (76,076), and Andheri RTO (63,681).
Statewide Registration Hubs and Road Safety Concerns
Beyond Mumbai, several other RTO offices in the state were exceptionally busy. Four offices—Nashik, Thane, Vasai, and Kalyan—each registered over one lakh new vehicles during the year, highlighting the widespread growth in vehicle ownership across Maharashtra's urban and semi-urban centers.
This exponential rise in the number of vehicles on the road casts a spotlight on the critical issue of road safety. The state reported 33,002 road accidents between January and November of last year, which tragically claimed 14,066 lives. The data underscores the urgent need for enhanced traffic management, better infrastructure, and robust road safety measures to match the pace of vehicular growth.
