Public Outrage Erupts in Madikeri After Teenager Trampled by Wild Elephant
The tragic death of a 19-year-old girl, identified as Pujya, has triggered widespread public outrage and protests in Madikeri. The incident occurred on Monday when the young woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Bettathur village, located near Madenadu.
Highway Blockade and Demands for Accountability
Angry villagers and local leaders staged a road blockade on the crucial Madikeri–Mangaluru national highway, bringing traffic to a standstill for approximately one hour. The protesters expressed deep frustration over what they described as repeated negligence by the forest department in preventing elephant-related incidents in the region.
Former speaker KG Bopaiah, who joined the demonstration, strongly criticized the handling of compensation matters. He pointed out that it was improper to issue a compensation cheque to the grieving family without the necessary signatures from forest officials, labeling this oversight as clear evidence of departmental irresponsibility.
Key Demands and Official Response
The protesters insisted on two primary demands: the immediate visit of the chief conservator of forests (CCF) for the Kodagu Circle to the incident site, and concrete action to address the ongoing threat posed by a lone elephant roaming the Bettathur area.
In response, CCF Sonal arrived at the protest location and provided assurances to the crowd. She confirmed that a specialized team had already been deployed with the explicit mission of capturing the problematic elephant. Following this commitment, the protesters agreed to withdraw their blockade.
Political and Community Support
The protest witnessed significant political and community involvement. District BJP spokesperson Talur Kishore Kumar, along with local leaders Kimmudira Jagadish and Anand Bettathur, and representatives from various farmers associations, were present to show solidarity.
Mysuru MP Yaduveer Wadiyar visited the bereaved family to offer his personal condolences. Additionally, former MLA Appachu Ranjan, accompanied by district BJP president Napanda Ravi Kalappa, met with the family to express their support during this difficult time.
Government Intervention and Operational Measures
Chief minister's legal advisor and Virajpet MLA AS Ponnanna also met with the victim's family. He assured them that the government would provide due compensation and instructed forest department officials to prioritize the capture of the elephant. Ponnanna further revealed that the matter had been discussed directly with the forest minister to ensure urgent attention.
Authorities have escalated their response by deploying thermal drones to locate the elephant more effectively. Search and capture operations continued through the night, highlighting the seriousness with which officials are treating the situation to prevent further tragedies.
