Lucknow Gets New Traffic Management Plan to Ease Congestion

Lucknow is taking concrete steps to address its growing traffic problems. The government has ordered officials to develop a coordinated plan aimed at reducing congestion across the city.

Focus on Practical Solutions at Problem Junctions

Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna, who is also in charge of Lucknow, issued these directions during a review meeting. He stressed the need for practical, location-specific solutions.

"The rising number of vehicles, increasing population, and daily traffic inflow from neighboring districts demand immediate action," Khanna said. "Officers must conduct field inspections at major intersections and implement measures that minimize inconvenience for commuters."

The plan will focus on several key areas:

  • Regular site inspections at snarl-prone junctions
  • Better traffic diversions and barricading systems
  • Implementation of one-way systems where needed

Committee to Identify Chronic Bottlenecks

Khanna directed the District Magistrate to form a special committee. This committee will include officials from:

  1. Traffic Police
  2. Lucknow Development Authority (LDA)
  3. Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC)

The committee has a clear mandate: identify chronic traffic bottlenecks, inspect them on the ground, and prepare a detailed action plan. They will consider options like traffic diversion, strategic barricading, and one-way movement systems.

Immediate Measures Implemented

As an immediate step, Khanna announced a restriction on heavy vehicles. These vehicles will be prohibited from entering in front of Vidhan Bhavan Gate Numbers 7 and 8 between 9 AM and 9 PM daily.

Electoral Roll Review Progresses Simultaneously

During the same meeting, Khanna reviewed the progress of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. He confirmed that the draft voter list has been published.

Khanna urged public representatives and officials to create awareness campaigns. These campaigns should help eligible voters check their names on the list. Those who find themselves left out should receive assistance in submitting Form 6 and necessary declarations.

"We must ensure maximum inclusion," Khanna emphasized. "Assistance should be available both online and offline to help every eligible voter get registered."

The meeting saw attendance from various stakeholders, including public representatives, the District Magistrate, the Municipal Commissioner, and police officials.

Viksit Bharat Act to Replace MGNREGA

Later, at a press conference, Khanna spoke about the Viksit Bharat–G Ram G Act, 2025. He explained that this new law will replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

The new statutory framework aligns with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. It proposes significant reforms, including increasing guaranteed employment from 100 to 125 days per rural household.

The law also aims to strengthen:

  • Transparency in employment schemes
  • Accountability of implementing agencies
  • Better planning of rural development projects

Employment generation under the new law will link to four priority areas:

  1. Water conservation projects
  2. Rural infrastructure development
  3. Livelihood enhancement programs
  4. Climate resilience initiatives

Wages will be paid digitally on a weekly basis or within 15 days. If this timeline is not met, the state government will pay an unemployment allowance to affected workers.
